50Plus : Arts & Entertainment : A look at the Oscar Best Picture ...

The Academy Award nominations have been announced - we look at the 10 films up for the coveted Best Picture award.

The Oscar nominations are out, and Steven Spielberg?s Lincoln came out on top with 12 nominations, with Life of Pi following close behind with 11. Airing on February 24th, the awards will be hosted by comedian Seth MacFarlane? ? who also received a nomination for writing ?Everybody Needs A Best Friend? for Ted, which is up for Best Original Song.

But the biggest race is always for Best Picture ? and with 10 nominees, it?s anyone?s guess which movie might take it home. With fantasy, docu-dramas, a musical and a love story, almost every genre is represented.

Here?s a look at the films that made the cut.

BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD

Six-year-old Hushpuppy lives in the Bathtub, a southern Delta community on the edge of the world, with her father, whose tough love prepares her for the rising water that threatens to destroy their town. This fantasy take on what Hurricane Katrina did to the people of New Orleans is the shining star of the year, with first time director, Benh Zeitlin, earning a coveted Best Director nomination, and nine-year-old Quvenzhan? Wallis becoming the youngest actor ever to be nominated for a Best Actress award.

DJANGO UNCHAINED

Quentin Tarintino?s latest film tells the story of Django ? a slave set free by a bounty hunter ? and his journey to find and rescue his wife from a brutal plantation owner.

ZERO DARK THIRTY

Kathryn Bigelow?s latest film explores the decade long hunt for al-Qaeda terrorist Osama bin Laden after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and his death at the hands of the Navy S.E.A.L Team 6 in May?2011.

ARGO

Ben Afflect directs and stars in this captivating true story of the joint CIA-Canadian secret operation to free six fugitive American diplomats from revolutionary Iran using a fake Canadian movie production.

AMOUR

Michael Haneke?s film tells the story of Georges and Anne, a retired couple in their 80s, after Anne suffers an attack. As her body slowly deteriorates, the couple?s love is severely tested. At 85, Emmanuelle Riva has become the oldest actress to be nominated for Best Actress for her powerful portrayal of Anne.

SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK

After a brief stay in a mental institution, former teacher Pat Solitano moves back in with his parents and attempts to reconcile with his ex-wife until he meets Tiffany, who suffers from similar problems.

LIFE OF PI

Based on Canadian Yann Martel?s beloved novel, Ang Lee?s latest tells the story of a young man who survives a disaster at sea and is hurtled into an incredible adventure. While cast away, he forms an unbreakable bond with another survivor ? a fearful Bengal tiger.
