Bloomberg Trader Messages - Business Insider

Business Insider

And this is just getting even more embarrassing...

The Financial Times'?Daniel Sch?fer and Andrew Edgecliffe-Johnson report?that thousands messages between traders on their Bloomberg Terminals were accidentally posted online and available through a simple Google search for years.

The more than 10,000 messages from 2009 and 2010?which were taken down today?included information such as names, email addresses and trading data, the report said.

They were posted on what was thought to be a secure site by a former Bloomberg employee (not a reporter) as part of a data mining project for pricing financial products, the FT's report said.?

Bloomberg told the FT that this would be against their policy and that they're considering all potential legal actions. ?

Bloomberg News reporters were just busted spying on employees at JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs?(at the very least) by tracking private client information on the Terminals.?

After Goldman complained, the media giant has suspended access to this data by its reporters.

If you're not already familiar, a Bloomberg Terminal is a machine that's targeted toward financial professionals so they can message other users, obtain real-time market data, news, and stock quotes among many other functions. ?There are about 300,000 being used world-wide and they cost about $20,000 per year.?

Both the CEO of Bloomberg and the editor-in-chief issued apologies. ??

The Gatsby Test

Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby.

In the weeks leading up to Friday?s release of Baz Luhrmann?s The Great Gatsby, I suffered from many of the same symptoms that the institutionalized Nick Carraway exhibits in the film: nervousness, irritability, insomnia?perhaps even a heightened propensity for drink. My anxiety level rose incrementally with each departmental meeting and office discussion that focused on the film. As my colleagues giggled with glee at their Gatsby video game, I cowered self-consciously in my cubicle. What was this stupid green light they were going on about, and why was that poor rower forever being borne back into the past?!

You see, I had a terrible secret: I have never read The Great Gatsby. I?m tempted to blame my otherwise excellent high school English teachers for this sad state of affairs; instead of Fitzgerald, we studied classics like Ethan Frome, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, and How Does a Poem Mean? However, I obviously bear some responsibility, too: I certainly could have picked up the great American novel during my English studies at a rival school of Tom Buchanan?s alma mater, or at any point since. But I didn?t. For whatever reason, Gatsby was consigned to my particular version of the list of classic books one pretends to have read while making small talk at dinner parties.?

My status as a Gatsby virgin, though personally embarrassing, proved useful to my editors, who wanted me to belatedly undergo the quintessential high school Gatsby experience. How would someone who hadn?t read the book fare on a multiple-choice quiz about the novel after viewing the film, they wondered? For that matter, could I pull off a convincing essay about Fitzgerald?s most famous work after watching the movie? ?I avoided reading commentary on the film, saw it on Friday evening, and then got to work on my assignments.

My first task was to answer 25 questions, mostly plot-related, from SparkNotes? Great Gatsby study guide. (Try it for yourself.) I expect this quiz would be a cakewalk if you had read the book?the questions were on the order of ?Who is Dan Cody???but, having not had that pleasure, I found the premises of certain questions (i.e., the ones I botched) completely confounding. ?

I earned 84 percent, not knowing details like why Gatsby dropped out of college. (Apparently he had to work as a janitor and was embarrassed? The film, as far as I can remember, is unclear about why his five-month military-sponsored stint at Oxford ended.) I was also completely oblivious to the fact that Gatsby?s father came to his son?s funeral. (The movie is quite clear that only Carraway was in attendance). Additionally, according to this quiz, Gatsby and Carraway fought in the same battle in World War I, which unless I blinked at the wrong moment, was not in the film.

For the essay portion of the test, we roped in Michael Donohue, an English teacher at Saint Ann?s School in Brooklyn (and a National Magazine Award-winning writer). Donohue provided me with a list of essay topics he routinely gives his sophomores after they read The Great Gatsby, and he kindly agreed to grade my essay as though I were a high school student who had read the book. I chose the following prompt:

Nick Carraway: Write an essay offering an interpretation of his role in this novel. Why does Fitzgerald choose to have the story narrated by a minor character? What's the effect of having the story told from Nick's perspective? To what extent is this Nick's story, and not Gatsby's? Is it a tale of his coming of age? Of his coming to realize that he belongs in Minnesota?

Hands-on with NVIDIA's project turned product, NVIDIA Shield

Handson with NVIDIA's project turned product, NVIDIA Shield

NVIDIA's Project Shield now has an official name (NVIDIA Shield), a release window ("by the end of June") and a price tag ($350). That's a full $100 step above the PlayStation Vita -- arguably the most competent competition for Shield's hardcore skewing demographic -- and even a smidgen over the cost of various full-on game consoles. Despite the high barrier to entry price-wise, NVIDIA tells us that Shield will follow the same annualized model that its mobile phone counterparts do: a new internal upgrade each year to keep up with the times. And we already know what that future looks like.

Given all that baggage, we can't help but approach our final hands-on ahead of Shield's late June launch with an eye toward worth of purchase. Is NVIDIA's Shield worth getting in on early?

ABC to start streaming live programming to mobile devices this week ...

Covered by the New York Times?yesterday, Walt Disney?s ABC will start testing a new mobile application called ?Watch ABC? that allows premium TV subscribers to watch a live stream of the network?s content on devices like smartphones and tablets. Launching first in New York and?Philadelphia on May 14, ABC management will continue to roll out access to the?application?in Chicago,?Houston,?San Francisco,?Los Angeles, Fresno and?Raleigh-Durham?this summer. The network is also currently in negotiations to launch the application with affiliates?around?the nation.?Hearst Television is the first major affiliate to sign a deal for streaming access and plans to launch in Boston and?Pittsburgh?in the near future.

WATCH_ABC_premium-tvRather than updating the existing ABC application for mobile devices, mobile users will download the Watch ABC app and authorize access with details about their current cable or satellite?subscription package. At launch, access will be limited to iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad as well as Amazon?s Kindle Fire tablet.

Further Android support will roll out later this summer with an app designed for Samsung?Galaxy?devices. Users will also be able to access the live stream on ABC.com using a desktop computer or laptop.?As a promotional tool, ABC will also offer a free preview of the application to all New York and?Philadelphia residents?through June 2013.?

Rather than displaying identical advertisements, the Watch ABC application will insert advertisements?specifically?developed for Web and mobile users. When asked about the ad alterations, ABC?vice president for digital media?Albert Cheng said ?What you see here is the same live programming, but what we are doing during the commercial break is actually inserting new ads into the stream.?

watch_abc_iphoneIt?s likely that these ads will be extremely similar, if not identical, to the advertisements that currently run on the ABC / NBC / FOX joint venture Hulu.com. This will allow ABC to accurately measure the effectiveness and performance of these ads since the?Nielsen Company isn?t quite ready to monitor ad performance on the Web. ?

It?s unclear if ABC plans to offer a premium subscription price to anyone that doesn?t currently subscribe to a?premium TV service. However, it?s extremely likely that this platform is designed to combat?Aereo; the service that streams high definition network content from antennas to subscribers over the Web.?Obviously?unhappy with another company making money on these feeds, it?s likely that more networks will follow ABC?s lead ?in providing a platform to access live content over the Web and on mobile devices.?

While ABC is pushing?aggressively?to launch the Watch ABC app in all markets before the start of the Fall 2013 television season, the network will face a variety of hurdles with local affiliates. Affiliates will likely push for more local content included in the streaming feed in addition to advertisements that are relevant to the same local community. In addition, local stations broadcast syndicated programming, but likely don?t have the rights to display that content on the Web. Assuming it?s prohibited, the Web stream would likely have to?default?back to the national feed. ?

NOPD: 17 wounded at New Orleans parade shooting

(AP) ? New Orleans police say 17 people have been wounded in a shooting during a Mother's Day parade in New Orleans on Sunday.

Police spokeswoman Remi Braden said in an email that many of the 17 victims were grazed and most of the wounds weren't life-threatening. No deaths were reported.

Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas told reporters that a 10-year-old girl grazed by a bullet was among those wounded in the shooting around 2 p.m. She was in good condition. He said three or four people were in surgery, but he didn't have their conditions.

Officers were interspersed among the hundreds of marchers, which is routine for an event like it.

Second-line parades are loose processions in which people dance down the street, often following behind a brass band.
