SAN ANTONIO, TX (December 8, 2012)Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is a very rare and aggressive disease that progresses rapidly and is associated with a very low survival rate. To understand how this type of cancer spreads, it's crucial to characterize the interactions between cancer cells and their 3D environment. Researchers at Fox Chase Cancer Center have developed a novel, 3D culture system that mimics the environment surrounding these cancer cells. This model could be used to test new anticancer drugs capable of inhibiting the spread of IBC tumors.

"The tumor microenvironment plays a pivotal role in tumor development and progression, and it also plays a big role in restricting tumorigenesis," says senior study co-investigator Edna Cukierman, PhD, Associate Professor of Cancer Biology at Fox Chase. "So understanding the interactions between the tumor and the environment will help us to come up with new ways to target the tumor." K Alpaugh, a co-author in this collaborative work, will present the study findings at the 2012 CTRC-AACR San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium on Saturday, December 8, 2012.

For the study, Cukierman, a tumor microenvironment expert, and her colleagues in the lab of Massimo Cristofanilli, MD, Professor at Fox Chase and a leading expert in inflammatory breast cancer, used tumor-associated stromal cells from patients with advanced IBC to build a 3D structure consisting of cell-derived extracellular matrixscaffold that provides structural and biochemical support to cells.

After culturing a plethora of established and patient-derived cancer cells in the stromal 3D system, the researchers categorized them into two groups. While some cells showed a significant increase in proliferation and resembled those seen in aggressive tumors, others were more similar to cells in less-aggressive tumors. These two types of cells modified the extracellular matrix in distinct ways, indicating that there is a dynamic interplay between cancer cells and the microenvironment.

Moreover, exposure to the matrix caused all of the cancer cells to increase their expression of the protein epithelial cadherin (i.e., E-Cadherin), whose levels are often elevated in IBC tumors. These findings suggest that the microenvironment may promote the proliferation, growth and invasion of IBC tumors.

"Our system could be used to predict the in vivo behavior of cells and to study the signaling mechanisms that are responsible for tumor-microenvironment interactions in IBC cancer," Cukierman says. "We have some gene candidates that we believe are responsible for the degree of aggressiveness we observe in the 3D model, so we would like to manipulate these genetically using mutants or pharmacologically using inhibitors to block the proteins that we believe are responsible. If that reverses the aggressiveness, it could give us a good hint of what types of targets we could perhaps try to develop and bring to the clinic in the future."

Film Review: Hitchcock ? ColumbusUnderground.com

Good evening? tonight?s review revolves around the production of Alfred Hitchcock?s quintessential film Psycho. Beginning with the release of North by Northwest, the film explores Psycho?s production from novel to screen and the role Hitchcock?s wife Alma played behind the scenes both personally and professionally.

Biography films live and die mostly on the effectiveness of the actor portraying the central character. For proof, just take a look at Lincoln starring Daniel Day Lewis (Abraham Lincoln) and Liz & Dick starring Lindsey Lohan (Elizabeth Taylor), one is a highly regarded film and the other was mocked for a week as a laughably bad joke. Granted one is a major motion picture directed by one the most acclaimed directors of the past half century while the other is a Lifetime Network movie of the week and whose director is best known for his Oprah Winfrey produced TV movies. Setting aside the scope and grandeur of the films, Daniel Day Lewis is likely going to receive numerous Best Actor nominations and Ms. Lohan is going to be nominated for another mandatory stay in LA County Jail. Thankfully Hitchcock?s casting choices leave it sitting much closer to the likes of Lincoln than Liz & Dick.

Since winning an Academy Award for his role as Hannibal Lector in The Silence of the Lambs, Hopkins has gotten by in Hollywood mostly by riding the coattails of that performance. He?s been in some critically and financially successful films since first donning the Lector mask, but most of his successes have come in films with ensemble casts, whereas many of his failures have come in films where he is one of the leads. In Hitchcock, Hopkins plays the title character. While the film isn?t your atypical ensemble film it comes close enough for the rest of the cast to take some of the pressure off Hopkins shoulders. Not only does Hopkins bare a strong resemblance to the iconic director, he manages to sound very similar to him as well even if his inflection is a bit hammy at times. Hitchcock?s oddities, mannerisms, and sometimes bizarre personality are on full display and while certain amount of dramatic license are surely taken Hopkin?s performance is one of his best in years.

Helen Mirren?s role as Alma Reville may not be as flattering, but it is no less important to Hitchcock?s story. Alma was a behind the scenes force to be reckoned with; she was not only Alfred?s biggest supporter but also a staunch critic that helped keep things in perspective for him. Mirren dazzles as she beautifully walks the tightrope between both worlds and is every bit equal to Hopkins much as Alma was equal to Hitchcock.

The large supporting cast is also quite strong but is underutilized. Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Biel play Psycho stars Janet Leigh and Vera Miles respectively. Early on Johansson seems a bit out of place, but she settles in as the movie progresses (I?d love to know how Jamie Lee Curtis feels about her portrayal). Jessica Biel?s performance is more subdued (and minor), and thankfully she doesn?t stick out like a sore thumb like she?s sometimes prone to do. There are several casting missed opportunities where interesting actors were given roles and then given very little screen time. Just two examples of this are James D?Arcy as Anthony Perkins and Ralph Macchio as Psycho screenwriter Joseph Stefano; they both have great introductions and then quickly disappear from the film.

Hitchcock?s biggest misstep comes in the form of its pacing and script decisions. The film is repeatedly sidelined by a subplot involving Hitchcock having a supposed unhealthy obsession with Ed Gein that affects his interpersonal relationships and health. The entire subplot feels out of place and sadly takes away from time that could have been better spent on some of the other cast members, the production of Psycho, or the just a few more interesting bits between Alfred and Alma.

I think Hitchcock will do rather well this awards season? when it comes to nominations for Best Actor and Actress. The film itself is enjoyable, provides an interesting look into the production of one of the greatest films ever made, and better yet gives us a peek into the lives of one of Hollywood?s first ?power couples?. Some poor script or editing decisions keep Hitchcock from reaching the upper echelon of biographical films, but like Alfred said himself, ?Drama is life with the dull parts left out.?

National Identity Theft Prevention and Awareness Month | SLA Legal ...

December is National Identity Theft Prevention and Awareness Month.? ID theft is in the news every time a major database is compromised (through hacking or human error) for our identifying information, whether it is a government agency, payment services provider, or data center.? Most would agree that laws can not necessarily keep up with the rapid-fire changes in the tech industry.? Plus, in terms of effectively recovering your good name and holding companies legally responsible for poor protection of your data, some would say the law is sorely lacking.?? In order to help those who have suffered through identity theft and worked to salvage their reputation, here are just a few resources:

Westlaw

  • Computer Crime and Technology in Law Enforcement (Database identifier: QNLNCCT)

As a newsletter, this periodical keeps police and prosecutors up to date, not only on identity theft, but also related subjects like Internet fraud, mail fraud, and cyber-stalking.

  • Information Security and Privacy: A Guide to Federal and State Law and Compliance (Database Identifier: INFOSECP)

New for 2012, this treatise covers identity theft law, but also analyzes and advises on subjects like electronic medical records, pharming, and financial privacy.

  • ID World (Database Identifier IDWORLD)

This is an industry publication that features expert interviews market research, and news on the fast-changing landscape of digital identities.

Lexis

  • Computer Law and Security Report (Library/File: ELSCJL/ECMLSR)

Identity theft is truly a worldwide problem, so it is helpful to have an international perspective on the issue.? This periodical focuses regionally on the US, UK, EU and Pacific Rim, and topically on IT security, telecom regulation, and data protection, among other things.

  • Data Identity and Security: Mealey?s Litigation Report(Library/File: MEALEY/MEADAT)

Mealey?s combines news with court filings and coverage of legislative activity, so it is particularly helpful to the legal world.? This periodical centers on data privacy, whether it is personal, medical or financial, and whether it is sought by government, employer or hacker.

Books/Periodicals

  • Thomson: Data Breach and Encryption Handbook (ISBN 9781604429893)

In this book, Thomson dives into data breaches, their causes, and prevention by using real-life examples and helpful graphics.? Current state and federal laws are covered, as is encryption technology and related issues.

  • Biegelman: Identity Theft Handbook: Detection, Prevention, and Security (ISBN 9780470179994)

From an author with years in the business of preventing identity theft, this book traces the origins and predicts the future of ID theft.? He addresses some of the more notorious ID thieves, types of ID theft, how to prevent ID theft and how to recover your identity if it is stolen.

  • Politis, Iglezakis, and Kozyris: Socioeconomic and Legal Implications of Electronic Intrusion (ISBN 9781605662046)

Written as a reference source for policymakers, academics, and researchers, the authors explore the background of cyber crime, the fine line between marketing and privacy invasion, spam, digital forensics and many other related topics.

Websites of Interest

This is a very helpful consumer resource, with a section geared especially towards teens, an interactive map for state-specific resources, and helpful boilerplate letters that aid victims on the road to recovering their identity.

Federal Websites

Noting that cyber crime consists of activities like hacking, online extortion, ID theft, and IP matters, and that one activity often overlaps another, IC3 was created as a partnership between the FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center. The two-pronged mission of IC3 is to create an easy reporting mechanism for victims of cyber crime, and a central location for all levels of law enforcement to converge and share information.

This site includes a section on a pilot program the IRS is undertaking to partner with law enforcement to prosecute individual cases of identity theft.

The FTC includes a section on ID theft affecting military families.? Note: the FTC is the primary federal agency which should receive reports of id theft.

The Center for Identity Management and Information Protection was established as a research center in order to inform policymakers and stakeholders about best practices and put results of new research into legislation and regulations.

To Achieve Career Goals, Stop Planning and Start Preparing

To Achieve Career Goals, Stop Planning and Start PreparingRobert Pozen's students at Harvard Business School frequently ask him how he planned out his career to become president of Fidelity Investments. His response? "There was no grand plan; I backed into my career one step at a time." Here, he explains what his history suggests about career planning and the key things he's learned along the way.

In the years after I graduated from law school, I had no idea that I would ultimately become the president of a financial services giant. I held positions as a law professor, a senior official at the Securities and Exchange Commission, and a partner in a law firm.

But during these early steps in my career, I learned a great deal about myself: I found that I really liked doing deals and managing people, rather than drafting regulations and writing articles. So I accepted a job offer at Fidelity Investments in 1987, when it was still relatively young. I spent the next decade climbing the corporate ladder; in 1997, for a complex set of reasons, I was chosen to be president of the company.

What does my history suggest about career planning? That you can't control the trajectory of your career. There are just too many factors beyond your control that will shape your job options?global economic trends, political elections, and technological changes, just to name a few. So don't commit the hubris of thinking that you can determine your professional glide path.

On the other hand, you can increase your probability of success by approaching your career with the right mind-set?one that recognizes that career planning is a continuous process that has to be actively managed. At each step in your career, you need to ask yourself: What can I do next that will maximize my options in the future?

Gain Transferable Knowledge

This process begins with the choices you make at school. You want your education to provide you with the necessary skills and expertise to succeed in a wide variety of jobs. This means that you need to make smart choice about the courses you will follow. I favor those that involve extensive writing, rigorous analysis, or quantitative skills.

Once you have finished your formal education, search for jobs that will allow you to further expand your transferable knowledge?to help you find your next job. Let's say you take a job putting together airplane leases. Within a few years, you could become the world's expert on the subject; however, this narrow expertise probably won't help you in any other line of work. By contrast, if you take a job that will expand your computer programming skills, you can greatly boost your options for later steps in your career.

Gaining experience outside your home country is another way to develop transferable knowledge. I lived for almost two years in Africa and have spent considerable time in England, Japan, and China. Through those experiences, I learned to deal with different economic, cultural, and political environments?which later helped me evaluate or start business units throughout the world.

Similarly, you can make yourself more attractive to more employers by working in different types of organizations during your career. For-profit companies may be concerned about hiring you if you have spent your entire career in government, for instance. At the top levels of management, publically traded companies often fear that a senior executive at a private company won't be able to adjust to the unique pressures of public shareholders and SEC mandates.

Grow Your Network

As you gain transferable knowledge, remember that that is only one piece of the puzzle: your next step should also help you expand your web of personal relationships with peers. To paraphrase a slogan, "Organizations don't hire people. People hire people." The more people you know, the more people will think of you when a job pops open?even when it is not publicly advertised.

Of course, you can build your network to some degree without changing jobs: you can attend conferences or participate in committees at trade associations. But this sort of event-driven networking pales in comparison with the deep bonds you can develop with your colleagues by working, conversing, and traveling with them.

As you ponder your next career step, then, think about the networking advantages you might gain from it. If you're ambitious, you can expand your network by moving to a new company, or even a new industry; obviously, that would be a momentous decision. More modestly, you can grow your network by accepting a job in another unit of the same firm or by heading an interdisciplinary project staffed by people from multiple units.

In this tough economy and ever-changing world, it is more important than ever to smartly evaluate each step in your career. To prepare for whatever surprises lie ahead, try to make choices today that will maximize your options in the future. Gain transferable expertise?in the classroom or at work?and form close bonds with your peers and colleagues.
