Lana Del Rey Halloween Costume: A How-To Guide | Music News ...

Pop stars and outrageous outfits go hand in hand, which makes it easy as candy corn to dress up as one for Halloween. Having trouble deciding which artist to choose from? Following our suggestions for how to properly go ?Gangnam Style? like Korean sensation PSY, chop off your locks like Miley Cyrus and the best way to go trick or treating as Gotye, we?re back once again to help you handpick from the most iconic looks of 2012, and to give you some tips on how to recreate them.

Today, we?ll show you how to have a Halloween costume that?s simply Born To Die over. Jump below for our Lana Del Rey How-To Guide.

What you?ll need:

  • For starters you?ll need some serious Lana hair. If you?re stumped try a tutorial like this one.
  • If you?re recreating LDR?s album cover, you?ll need a plain white semi-sheer blouse (like this one from She Inside) buttoned up to the top and a pair of gold doorknocker earrings like these for $49. The pair it with some ?Blue Jeans? or denim shorts. Lana likes to mix up dressy with casual.
  • If you?re going for more of a Lana Live look, any variation on a white dress will do. We especially like this one from Dorothy Perkins.
  • For your makeup, unless you?re naturally as blessed as Lizzie Grant over exaggerate your lipstick. Make sure to do some cat eyeliner and false lashes too.

There you have it! You?re officially ready to play your Halloween games as Lana Del Rey. Remember, regardless of how much fun you?re having, try to keep a mysterious and solemn face (pouting helps too!). And if all else fails, just keep spinning:

From words to deeds: Why election matters

When you vote for Democrat Barack Obama or Republican Mitt Romney in November, you'll be voting for more than a president. You'll be casting a ballot for and against a checklist of policies that touch your life and shape the country you live in.

It can be hard to see, through the fog of negative ads, sound bite zingers and assorted other campaign nasties, that the election is a contest of actual ideas. But it is always so. A candidate's words connect to deeds in office.

Roll back to 2008. Obama was the presidential candidate who promised to get the country on a path to health insurance for all. He delivered. If you haven't noticed one way or another, soon you will.

And back to 2000. George W. Bush ran on a platform of big tax cuts. That's precisely what the country got. A decade later, taxes are lower than they otherwise would have been.

That's not to say you can count on Romney's checklist or Obama's to come into full being. You sure can't.

By nature and necessity, the presidency is in large part a creature of compromise and improvisation. The unforeseen happens (the terrorist attacks), or circumstances change (the December 2007-June 2009 recession), or things that the candidate sets out to do run into a buzz saw in Congress (way too many examples to mention). That's why promises are broken, priorities shift and intentions get swept away by the fistful.

Even so, you get what you vote for, probably about as often as not. And a lot of what you get, you will feel in a personal way, for better or worse, no matter how distant Washington seems from your world.

The wars called away people in your orbit, if not in your family. The spending that each candidate wants to do ? Romney vows military expansion, Obama would put more into education, for starters ? is bound to benefit many livelihoods in some fashion, at the risk of even deeper national debt. And read their fine print: Medicare won't be the same in the years ahead. Perhaps not Social Security, either. (There's that national debt, after all.)

Across the spectrum of issues, Obama and Romney have drawn contrasts and telegraphed divergent ways for the nation to go.

You can't believe everything you hear. But you can believe enough to know that Tuesday, Nov. 6, is a true day of decision.

In this series, Associated Press writers who cover subjects at stake in the election look at the positions of the candidates, the underlying issues ? and why it matters.

Lukashenko speech hints at possible future political reform in - RT

Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko called on the newly elected parliament to modernize the country?s political system. That process will largely depend on domestic circumstances and the situation in neighboring countries, he said.

?Under tough pressure from outside, when the existence of the country is at stake, we will still gather around some personality like other Slavic people do, in order to protect ourselves and defend our piece of land,? Lukashenko said during a Thursday speech at the final session of the outgoing Belarusian parliament.

He said that it is impossible to outmaneuver Belarus, and that ?it is necessary to think about other ways of influencing? the country and its society.

Lukashenko announced that he would continue to grant parliament new powers as civil society develops, Belarusian news agency BelTA reported. He also expressed ambitions to modernize the country to the level of other developed nations.

?Today someone may think this is a fantasy. But some time ago the idea of Belarus being a sovereign state with its own independent policy also seemed to be wishful thinking,? Lukashenko said.

He also said that the Belarusian electoral system should remain unchanged for the time being: ?Let?s not rush. These are not us who should define ? we will make a decision. And time and the people should define.?

Lukashenko supporters won every seat in the Belarusian parliament in the country?s September 23 election, while opposition groups boycotted the polls.

Arachnid Love: Single Spider Dads Caring For Eggs

Single spider dads caring for eggs suffer no disadvantages despite parenting costs.
Single fatherhood is a challenge many arachnids undertake, guarding eggs laid by females despite the costs to their own health and mating benefits, but the news may not be all bad for these dads.

New research now shows that, in one species of spiders, males exclusively responsible for guarding eggs actually enjoy survival benefits rather than suffer losses to health or mating privileges. The study, published Oct. 10 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Gustavo Santos Requena and colleagues from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, evaluates the costs and benefits of exclusive paternal care, the rarest form of parental investment in nature, in the harvestman spider Iporangaia pustulosa.

The researchers tracked spiders in the forests of southeastern Brazil over the course of a year to observe how caring behavior in males affected their chances of survival or body condition. Though caring males feed very rarely and lose body condition while guarding eggs, the authors found that these spiders suffered no long-term decrease in fitness compared to females or non-caring males. Their sedentary behavior during the caring period also makes them less likely to be eaten by predators, reducing their mortality risk. The authors also suggest that providing females cost-free care for their offspring might make caring males more attractive to females, thereby improving their chances for reproductive success.

According to the authors, their results suggest that the reduction in mortality risk, combined with the genetic advantages of improving survival of their offspring, may have played important roles in favoring the evolution of paternal care in insects.
