Fossil brain teaser: New study reveals patterns of dinosaur brain development

May 20, 2013 ? A new study conducted at the University of Bristol and published online today in the Journal of Evolutionary Biology sheds light on how the brain and inner ear developed in dinosaurs.

Stephan Lautenschlager from Bristol's School of Earth Sciences, together with Tom H?bner from the Nieders?chsische Landesmuseum in Hannover, Germany, picked the brains of 150 million year old dinosaurs.

The two palaeontologists studied different fossils of the Jurassic dinosaur Dysalotosaurus lettowvorbecki: a very young (juvenile) individual of approximately three years of age and a fully grown specimen of more than 12 years of age.

Stephan Lautenschlager, lead author of the paper, said: "The two different growth stages of Dysalotosaurus provided a unique opportunity to study their brain, and how it developed during the growth of the animal."

Using high-resolution CT scanning and 3D computer imaging, it was possible to reconstruct and visualise the brain and inner ear of Dysalotosaurus lettowvorbecki -- a small, plant-eating dinosaur, which lived 150 million years ago, in what is now Tanzania.

Co-author Tom H?bner said: "Well-preserved fossil material, which can be used to reconstruct the brain anatomy is usually rare. Thus, we were fortunate to have different growth stages available for our study."

By looking at the brain and inner ear anatomy, the two researchers found that the brain of Dysalotosaurus underwent considerable changes during growth -- most likely as a response to environmental and metabolic requirements. However, important parts responsible for the sense of hearing and cognitive processes were already well developed in the young individual.

Stephan Lautenschlager said: "Our study shows that the brain was already well-developed in the young dinosaurs and adapted perfectly to interact with their environment and other individuals."

This study has important ramifications for the understanding of how parts of the brain developed in dinosaurs. However, further research into that field is necessary to investigate if the pattern of brain development in individual dinosaurs is also reflected in a large scale trend during the more than 150 million years of dinosaur evolution.

The study was funded by a research fellowship to Stephan Lautenschlager from the German Volkswagen Foundation.

The New Xbox One Live Features Add Advanced Social Gaming ...

While we don?t have all of the details on the new Xbox Live features announced at today?s Xbox One launch, it?s clear that Microsoft is going all-in when it comes to social and multiplayer gaming. First, they are upping the number of dedicated servers for online play from 15,000 to 300,000 and nearly all of your content and game data will be store in the cloud.

The service will also allow you to take in-game video and photos and share them over social media services. This is similar to Sony?s PS4 solution and is definitely a method allow users to create valuable and viral homemade content while still maintaining control of distribution. As games become more social and more cinematic, this will be an important differentiator and is essentially free advertising for game makers.

Finally, the new service adds asynchronous matchmaking, which means you can be searching for potential teammates (or enemies) while watching TV or playing another game. This increases the stickiness of multiplayer titles by nudging you back into the game when a worth opponent appears. Microsoft has also added ?bigger matches with more players? and, most important, ?living and persistent worlds.? This sounds to me like a direct attack on MMORPGs like World Of Warcraft and could make the Xbox a formidable force in the popular professional gaming subculture, a niche no console maker has yet cracked.

We should see further information about the Xbox One at E3 this summer.

The pope and the devil: Is Francis an exorcist?

The Vatican was more cautious Tuesday, saying Francis ?didn?t intend to perform any exorcism. But as he often does for the sick or suffering, he simply intended to pray for someone.? (AP Photo/APTN)

(AP) ? Is Pope Francis an exorcist?

The question has bubbled up ever since Francis laid his hands on the head of a young man in a wheelchair after celebrating Sunday Mass in St. Peter's Square. The young man heaved deeply a half-dozen times, shook, then slumped in his wheelchair as Francis prayed over him.

The television station of the Italian bishops' conference reported Monday that it had surveyed exorcists, who agreed there was "no doubt" that Francis either performed an exorcism or a prayer to free the man from the devil.

The Vatican was more cautious. In a statement Tuesday, it said Francis "didn't intend to perform any exorcism. But as he often does for the sick or suffering, he simply intended to pray for someone who was suffering who was presented to him."

Fueling the speculation is Francis' obsession with Satan, a frequent subject of his homilies, and an apparent surge in demand for exorcisms among the faithful despite the irreverent treatment the rite often receives from Hollywood.

Who can forget the green vomit and the spinning head of the possessed girl in the 1973 cult classic "The Exorcist"?

In his very first homily as pope on March 14, Francis warned cardinals gathered in the Sistine Chapel the day after he was elected that "he who doesn't pray to the Lord prays to the devil."

He has since mentioned the devil on a handful of occasions, most recently in a May 4 homily when in his morning Mass in the Vatican hotel chapel he spoke of the need for dialogue ? except with Satan.

"With the prince of this world you can't have dialogue: Let this be clear!" he warned.

Experts said Francis' frequent invocation of the devil is a reflection both of his Jesuit spirituality and his Latin American roots, as well as a reflection of a Catholic Church weakened by secularization.

"The devil's influence and presence in the world seems to fluctuate in quantity inversely proportionate to the presence of Christian faith," said the Rev. Robert Gahl, a moral theologian at Rome's Pontifical Holy Cross University. "So, one would expect an upswing in his malicious activity in the wake of de-Christianization and secularization" in the world and a surge in things like drug use, pornography and superstition.

In recent years, Rome's pontifical universities have hosted several courses for would-be exorcists on the rite, updated in 1998 and contained in a little red leather-bound booklet. The rite is relatively brief, consisting of blessings with holy water, prayers and an interrogation of the devil in which the exorcist demands to know the devil's name and when it will leave the possessed person.

Only a priest authorized by a bishop can perform an exorcism, and canon law specifies that the exorcist must be "endowed with piety, knowledge, prudence and integrity of life."

While belief in the devil is consistent with church teaching, the Holy See does urge prudence, particularly to ensure that the afflicted person isn't merely psychologically ill.

The Rev. Giulio Maspero, a Rome-based systematic theologian who has witnessed or participated in more than a dozen exorcisms, says he's fairly certain that Francis' prayer on Sunday was either a full-fledged exorcism or a more simple prayer to "liberate" the young man from demonic possession.

He noted that the placement of the pope's hands on the man's head was the "typical position" for an exorcist to use.

"When you witness something like that ? for me it was shocking ? I could feel the power of prayer," he said in a phone interview, speaking of his own previous experiences.

Sunday also happened to be the Pentacost, when the faithful believe Jesus' apostles received the fullness of the Holy Spirit, and Maspero noted the symbolism.

"The Holy Spirit is connected to the exorcism because ... it is the manifestation of how God is present among us and in our world," he said.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, sought to tamper speculation that what occurred was a full-fledged exorcism. While he didn't deny it outright ? he said Francis hadn't "intended" to perform one ? he stressed that the intention of the person praying is quite important.

Late Tuesday, the director of TV2000, the television of the Italian bishops' conference, went on the air to apologize for the earlier report.

"I don't want to attribute to him a gesture that he didn't intend to perform," said the director, Dino Boffo.

That said, Francis' actions and attitude toward the devil are not new: As archbishop of Buenos Aires, the former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio frequently spoke about the devil in our midst. In the book "Heaven and Earth," Bergoglio devoted the second chapter to "The Devil" and said in no uncertain terms that he believes in the devil and that Satan's fruits are "destruction, division, hatred and calumny."

"Perhaps its greatest success in these times has been to make us think that it doesn't exist, that everything can be traced to a purely human plan," he wrote.

Italian newspapers noted that the late Pope John Paul II performed an exorcism in 1982 ? near the same spot where Francis prayed over the young disabled man Sunday.

  • "The Great Gatsby" (May 10)

    F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel gets the Baz Luhrmann treatment: 3-D and a soundtrack by Jay-Z. (Go all-in, however, on Joel Edgerton's mustache.)

Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, John Cho and director J.J. Abrams all return for "Star Trek Into Darkness," the highly anticipated sequel to 2009's "Star Trek." Boldly go, especially with newcomers Alice Eve (as a potential love interest for Kirk) and Benedict Cumberbatch (as a terribly evil villain).

  • "Frances Ha" (May 17)

Co-written by Noah Baumbach and star Greta Gerwig, "Frances Ha" focuses on Frances (Gerwig), a young woman navigating life and love in New York. "This is a celebration for me," Baumbach said at the New York Film Festival last year. "One idea for the movie was that we could make it like a great pop song, so that as soon as it's over, you want to play it again." Just as an FYI: You will.

  • "Epic" (May 24)

From "Ice Age" director Chris Wedge comes an action-adventure about good and evil and all that stuff. What you'll want to note is the bananas vocal cast: Beyonce, Pitbull, Steven Tyler, Josh Hutcherson, Amanda Seyfried, Aziz Ansari, Christoph Waltz, Chris O'Dowd and Jason Sudeikis.

  • "The Hangover Part III" (May 24)

It all ends. Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Justin Bartha, Heather Graham, Ken Jeong, John Goodman and Melissa McCarthy star.

  • "Fast & Furious 6" (May 24)

The movie that will make you believe a car can drive through the cockpit of an exploding plane.

  • "Before Midnight" (May 24)

The third film in Richard Linklater's "Before" franchise (following "Before Sunrise" and "Before Sunset"), "Before Midnight" is one of 2013's best movies thus far. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy reprise their roles, respectively, as Jesse and Celine.

  • "Now You See Me" (May 31)

Magic bank robbers! No, really: "Now You See Me" is about magicians who rob banks. The cast is impressive here: Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Isla Fisher, Melanie Laurent, Woody Harrelson and Dave Franco.

  • "After Earth" (May 31)

Will and Jaden Smith star in this post-apocalyptic thriller from M. Night Shyamalan.

Alexander Skarsgard, Ellen Page and Brit Marling star in this "Fight Club"-y thriller about environmental terrorists and the law enforcement agent (Marling) who infiltrates their ranks.

  • "The Kings Of Summer" (May 31)

Formerly called "Toy's House," "The Kings Of Summer" focuses on three friends who build a house in the woods after running away from home. Think "Stand by Me," "The Goonies" and "The Tree of Life," but with Ron Swanson as co-star. (Nick Offerman plays one of the boys' dads.) This excellent indie debuted at Sundance.

  • "The Internship" (June 7)

Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson reunite for the first time since 2005's "Wedding Crashers" for "The Internship," a comedy about two middle-aged guys taking internships at Google. Is it OK to say that this looks really funny? Cool, thanks.

  • "The Purge" (June 7)

One week after "Before Midnight," Ethan Hawke also stars in the horror thriller "The Purge," a film about home invasions on steroids.

  • "Much Ado About Nothing" (June 7)

Joss Whedon takes on Shakespeare in this modern-day adaptation of "Much Ado About Nothing." A charming diversion with no superheros in sight.

  • "Man Of Steel" (June 14)

You'll believe a man can fly. Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane and Russell Crowe star.

  • "This Is The End" (June 14)

Seth Rogen, James Franco, Danny McBride, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, Jay Baruchel, Michael Cera, Emma Watson and dozens of other stars play themselves ("themselves") in Rogen's directorial debut, an all-out, R-rated apocalypse comedy. (Rogen co-wrote and co-directed with Evan Goldberg, his "Superbad" collaborator.) "This Is The End" has the most lol-worthy trailer of the year. (NSFW, of course.)

  • "The Bling Ring" (June 14)

Sofia Coppola's take on the notorious Burglar Bunch, a group of Los Angeles teens who robbed from stars like Paris Hilton. Emma Watson and this movie for all the wins.

  • "Twenty Feet From Stardom" (June 14)

This Sundance hit focuses on famed back-up singers like Darlene Love.

  • "Monsters University" (June 21)

Mike and Sully are back in this prequel to "Monsters, Inc." Expect bank.

  • "World War Z" (June 21)

Originally set for release last December, "World War Z" finally arrives in theaters this June. Will the Brad Pitt film overcome a troubled production (including last-minute rewrites and reported fights between Pitt and director Marc Forster) and find its audience? Since zombies are so hot right now ("Zoolander" reference), don't bet against that happening.

  • "The Heat" (June 28)

"The Heat" was supposed to come out on April 5, but Fox was so happy with the film that the studio moved Paul Feig's comedy into the heart of the summer. The red-band trailer, shown here, helps explain that decision. (It's the best.) Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy star.

  • "White House Down" (June 28)

Channing Tatum (as wannabe Secret Service agent) and Jamie Foxx (as the President of the United States) team up to stop the U.S. government from crumbling from the inside. Roland Emmerich ("Independence Day") directs. Yep, in.

  • "I'm So Excited" (June 28)

Get excited: This is Pedro Almodovar's first film in two years.

  • "Despicable Me 2" (July 3)

"Despicable Me 2"; or, ka-ching, ka-ching, ka-ching. (It's going to make a lot of money.)

  • "The Lone Ranger" (July 3)

Disney's $250 million gamble: will audiences want to see "The Lone Ranger" with Johnny Depp when Johnny Depp isn't playing "The Lone Ranger"? (He's Tonto.) Gore Verbinksi (the "Pirates" franchise) directs, so don't be surprised if the answer is yes.

  • "Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain" (July 3)

Sleeper hit potential: Kevin Hart's last concert film, "Kevin Hart: Laugh At My Pain," earned a surprise $7.7 million at the box office in 2011.

  • "The Way Way Back" (July 5)

From Oscar-winning screenwriters Nat Faxon and Jim Rash ("The Descendants"), "The Way Way Back" looks like the type of charming indie that Fox Searchlight normally releases during the summertime. That's probably why the studio spent $10 million to acquire the film -- co-starring Steve Carell, Sam Rockwell, Maya Rudolph and more -- at the Sundance Film Festival in January.

  • "Grown Ups 2" (July 12)

Because you've always wanted to see a deer pee on Adam Sandler's face.

Robots vs. monsters! Guillermo Del Toro directs what will be your geeky cousin's favorite movie of 2013.

  • "Crystal Fairy" (July 12)

Michael Cera play an American jerk searching for a mystical high in this Sundance comedy.

  • "The Conjuring" (July 19)

This movie is so scary that the MPAA gave it an R-rating despite a lack of violence or bloodshed. Translation: Too scary.

  • "R.I.P.D." (July 19)

Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds star in this high-concept adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name. From IMDb: "A recently slain cop joins a team of undead police officers working for the Rest in Peace Department and tries to find the man who murdered him."

    Competition in the quantum world

May 19, 2013 ? Innsbruck physicists led by Rainer Blatt and Peter Zoller have gained a deep insight into the nature of quantum mechanical phase transitions. They are the first scientists that simulated the competition between two rival dynamical processes at a novel type of transition between two quantum mechanical orders.

They have published the results of their work in the journal Nature Physics.

"When water boils, its molecules are released as vapor. We call this change of the physical state of matter a phase transition," explains Sebastian Diehl from the Institute of Theoretical Physics at the University of Innsbruck. Together with his colleagues from the Institute for Experimental Physics and the theorist Markus Mueller from the Complutense University of Madrid, he studied the transition between two quantum mechanical orders in a way never before observed. The quantum physicists in Innsbruck use a new device for the experiment, which is currently considered to be one of the most promising developments in quantum physics: a quantum simulator. It is based on a small-scale quantum computer and can simulate physical phenomena a classical computer cannot investigate efficiently. "Such a quantum simulator allows us to experimentally study quantum phenomena in many-body systems that are coupled to their environment," explain experimental physicists Philipp Schindler and Thomas Monz.

    Observing the competition

With just a few trapped ions the scientists simulate the complex physical processes of quantum mechanical phase transitions. To achieve this, they have to manipulate and control the particles with high accuracy; the experimental physicists in Innsbruck are world leaders in this field. "For this experiment we use a programmable quantum simulator with up to five ions," says Philipp Schindler. One of the particles is used as a means to couple the system to the classical environment in a controlled manner. The other ions are used for carrying out quantum operations. "We call this an open quantum simulator. Usually we want to suppress this coupling because it destroys the fragile quantum effects in the system. Here, however, we use it to bring order into the quantum mechanical system," explains Schindler. "In our specific case, we engineer a classical environment, which generates dissipative dynamics, leading to fragile long-range quantum mechanical correlations between distant particles." In the following step, this dynamics is then set in competition with a different type of interactions, which interrupts the dynamics that create the quantum mechanical order. "By doing this, we are able to observe how the competition between these two processes takes place and what precisely occurs right at the transition between two distinct orders of matter," explains theoretical physicist Sebastian Diehl.

    Error reduction

The experiment demands an enormous degree of precision, which requires immediate error corrections to be able to simulate the physical processes correctly. Since a comprehensive error correction, as developed for quantum computers, involves considerable resource overheads, the physicists in Innsbruck chose another promising alternative path. They identified the most important sources of error occurring during the simulation and specifically targeted them. Schindler is convinced: "This way of error reduction will surely set an example for other experiments. While general quantum error correction remains a long-term goal, we may be able to successfully use this type of error correction a lot sooner for reliable quantum simulation of larger systems," adds Markus Mueller.

$590M-plus Powerball: 1 winning ticket sold in Fla.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? It's all about the odds, and one lone ticket in Florida has beaten them all by matching each of the numbers drawn for the highest Powerball jackpot in history at an estimated $590.5 million, lottery officials said Sunday.

The single winner was sold at a Publix supermarket in Zephyrhills, Fla., according to Florida Lottery executive Cindy O'Connell. She told The Associated Press by telephone that more details would be released later.

"This would be the sixth Florida Powerball winner and right now, it's the sole winner of the largest ever Powerball jackpot," O'Connell told AP. "We're delighted right now that we have the sole winner."

She said Florida has had more Powerball winners than any other state.

The winner was not immediately identified publicly and O'Connell did not give any indication just hours after Saturday's drawing whether anyone had already stepped forward with that winning ticket.

With four out of every five possible combinations of Powerball numbers in play, lottery executives said earlier that someone was almost certain to win the game's highest jackpot, a windfall of hundreds of millions of dollars ? and that's after taxes.

    Saturday night's winning numbers were 10, 13, 14, 22 and 52, with a Powerball of 11.

Estimates had earlier put the jackpot at around $600 million. But Powerball's online site said early Sunday that its latest tabulations of all tickets sold put that jackpot at an estimated $590.5 million.

Terry Rich, CEO of the Iowa Lottery, initially confirmed that one Florida winning ticket had been sold. He told AP that following a winner, the Powerball grand prize was being reset at an estimated jackpot of $40 million, or about $25.1 million cash value.

The chances of winning the prize were astronomically low: 1 in 175.2 million. That's how many different ways you can combine the numbers when you play. But lottery officials estimated that about 80 percent of those possible combinations had been purchased recently.

While the odds are low for any one individual or individuals, O'Connell said, the chance that one hits paydirt is what makes Powerball an "exciting game to play."

"There is just the chance that you will have the opportunity and Florida is a huge Powerball state. We have had more winners than any other state that participates in Powerball."

Such longshot odds didn't deter people across Powerball-playing states ? 43 plus Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands ? from lining up at gas stations and convenience stores Saturday for their chance at striking it filthy rich.

Calls by AP to the Publix supermarket where the winning ticket was sold were not answered early Sunday.

Before the drawing, there was a rush for tickets around the country.

At a mini market in the heart of Los Angeles' Chinatown, employees broke the steady stream of customers into two lines: One for Powerball ticket buyers and one for everybody else. Some people appeared to be looking for a little karma.

"We've had two winners over $10 million here over the years, so people in the neighborhood think this is the lucky store," employee Gordon Chan said as he replenished a stack of lottery tickets on a counter.

The world's largest jackpot was a $656 million Mega Millions jackpot in March 2012. If $600 million, the jackpot would currently include a $376.9 million cash option.

Clyde Barrow, a public policy professor at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, specializes in the gaming industry. He said one of the key factors behind the ticket-buying frenzy is the size of the jackpot ? people are interested in the easy investment.

"Even though the odds are very low, the investment is very small," he said. "Two dollars gets you a chance."

That may be why Ed McCuen has a Powerball habit that's as regular as clockwork. The 57-year-old electrical contractor from Savannah, Ga., buys one ticket a week, regardless of the possible loot. It's a habit he didn't alter Saturday.

"You've got one shot in a gazillion or whatever," McCuen said, tucking his ticket in his pocket as he left a local convenience store. "You can't win unless you buy a ticket. But whether you buy one or 10 or 20, it's insignificant."

Seema Sharma doesn't seem to think so. The newsstand employee in Manhattan's Penn Station purchased $80 worth of tickets for herself. She also was selling tickets all morning at a steady pace, instructing buyers where to stand if they wanted machine-picked tickets or to choose their own numbers.

"I work very hard ? too hard ? and I want to get the money so I can finally relax," she said. "You never know."

French president signs gay marriage into law

PARIS (AP) ? France will see its first gay weddings within days, after French President Francois Hollande signed a law Saturday authorizing marriage and adoption by same-sex couples and ending months of nationwide protests and wrenching debate.

Hollande's office said he signed the bill Saturday morning, a day after the Constitutional Council struck down a challenge to the law and ruled it in line with France's constitution.

Hollande, a Socialist, had made legalizing gay marriage one of his campaign pledges last year. While polls for years have shown majority support for gay marriage in France, adoption by same-sex couples is more controversial.

The parliamentary debate exposed a deep conservatism and attachment to traditional families in France's rural core that is often eclipsed by and at odds with libertine Paris.

But mostly, it tapped into deep discontent with the Socialist government, largely over Hollande's handling of the economy. Months of anti-gay marriage protests became a flashpoint for frustrations with Hollande, and occasionally degenerated into violence.

In addition, gay rights groups reported a rise in attacks on homosexuals as the parliamentary debate was under way. Protest organizers distanced themselves from the trouble-makers.

The opposition isn't ready to give up. It plans a protest May 26 that aims to parlay the success of the anti-gay marriage movement into a broader anti-Hollande one. Among those expected to attend is Jean-Francois Cope, the leader of the opposition UMP party, riven by divisions and struggling for direction since Nicolas Sarkozy lost the presidency last year.

Hollande warned that he wouldn't accept any disruption of France's first gay marriages.

One couple signed up Saturday to tie the knot on May 29 in the gay-friendly southern French city of Montpellier.

"We're very happy that today we can finally talk of love after all the talk of legislation and political battles," one of the future newlyweds, Vincent Autin, said on France-Info radio.

According to French law, couples must register to marry in city hall and wait at least 10 days before holding a ceremony so that anyone objecting to the union ? such as an existing spouse ? has time to intervene.

Marketing whizzes are already preparing lesbian and gay cake toppers, his-and-his wedding bands, and other services for France's gay weddings.

Despite the protests, the law passed easily in both houses of parliament, which are dominated by Hollande's Socialists. And the Constitutional Council said, "Marriage as a union between a man and a woman cannot be considered a fundamental principle."

France is the most populous country to have legal gay marriages, and the 14th country worldwide. In the United States, Minnesota became the 12th state in the country to legalize same-sex unions on Tuesday.

In neighboring Belgium, thousands of people took to the confetti-covered streets of Brussels to take part in an annual gay pride march on Saturday. Trucks blasting music and carrying dance floors made their way through cheering crowds. Belgium legalized gay marriage 10 years ago and permitted adoption for same-sex couples seven years ago.

Sergiy Garist outshines Mathias Rud in qualifying round - Hellas ...

Sergiy Garist outshines Mathias Rud in qualifying round - Hellas International 2013?

Ukraine?s talented shuttler, Sergiy Garist, played flawless badminton and reserved a seat in the main round of Hellas International on Thursday, May 16, 2013. He was up against the Men's Singles shuttler, Mathias Rud Pedersen of Denmark, and both contenders made this contest memorable by challenging each other in all three sets.

The opening game belonged to Mathias as he registered a tight yet favourable score of 24-22. However, the ending two games were dominated by Sergiy, who placed impressive results of 21-13 and 21-17 to claim victory.

The Danish campaigner showed great fighting spirit in first set to pocket this vital match point despite of remaining at lower end in most parts of the game. He played passively in the establishing rallies and allowed the opposing shuttler to gain an early advantage. Things became worse when Mathias blundered in few back-to-back rallies just before the interval.

However, he managed to bounce back with a strong reply and amazed every one. At first, he narrowed the gap on points table and then established a decent lead in third quarter of the set. Although, Sergiy tried hard to tip the scale in his favour, he had to surrender after reading 22-24 score on the board.

Next game started in an interesting manner, as Mathias relished full benefits of his lead in match score position and established a strong grip over game. However, his supremacy was really short lived as Sergiy prevailed in few back-to-back rallies and turned his rival?s plans into dust.

The Ukrainian player managed to finish first half of the set with a favourable figure of 11 and then made best out of this psychological edge in latter part of the game. He maintained a significant difference on the points table all the way to game point situation and piled up a winning total of 21-13.

The third set became consequential with this development and both contenders made every effort to claim this final match point. They chased each other throughout the decider and made the crowd gasp with a splendid show of skills.

The nerve-racking contest finally ended when Sergiy registered a concluding margin of 21-17. With this win, he marched into main round, where Jan Frohlich will be his competitor.

What Online Scams Would Look Like If They Were Real People

When we see Nigerian princes or weird links or invasive people who want to much personal information pop up in our e-mail inbox, we immediately know that they're scams. It's part of the Internet. But what if it was a part of real life too? It would be absolutely terrifying to see online scams and viruses as people.

    'We will get this done'

    Chris IvoryAP

New Jets running back Chris Ivory was happy to get out of New Orleans, if only for the opportunity.

Thanks to the events of today, that opportunity might be even bigger.

Prior to the arrest of running back Mike Goodson on drug and gun charges, Ivory said he looked forward to the increased work the Jets could offer, after being caught in the traffic of a busy Saints backfield.

?I think it does give me a better opportunity,? Ivory said Thursday, via Jane McManus of ESPNNewYork.com. ?It was just a tough situation over there. We all had our roles. It?s just tough to fit four backs in a system.?

No one knows what the Jets are going to do about Goodson, who was signed to a three-year, $6.9 million deal prior to Ivory being acquired in a traded with the Saints. They haven?t gone beyond the obligatory ?we?re aware, take this seriously, investigate, blah blah blah? statement at the moment.

But even if Goodson stays, Ivory has a chance unlike before.

In New Orleans, where he was forced to share the ball with Pierre Thomas, Mark Ingram and Darren Sproles, Ivory never had much of a chance to shine. His carries dropped steadily until he had just 40 last year, but that won?t be the case in New York.

Ivory figured to be the more physical component to the run game (Goodson?s an outside speed runner, best-used in space), but now might get a chance to do more.

He only caught three passes in three seasons with the Saints, but when your options include Marques Colston, Jimmy Graham and Sproles, why would you throw it to Ivory?

?People say I can?t catch,? Ivory said. ?But how many times have these people seen me receive a pass out the backfield??

Thanks to some apparent poor decision-making by a teammate, he might get to do more than he imagined.

    Welcome to whitenoise!

Welcome old friends and lost travelers! One way or another you have found your way to whitenoise! But what is this place? And what can be your role here? Good questions! The shortest, easiest answer to both questions is: Just about whatever you want it to be.

To the best of my knowledge, whitenoise was formed back in 2009. It's Gizmodo's side blog that more or less serves as an open thread anyone to talk about anything. Each of the Gawker sites have such a place. Naturally, the subject matter on whitenoise leaned towards technology and attracted a tech savy crowd. Over time the conversation evolved to practically everything under the sun*. Cat gifs? Bring em on. Have an issue with an editor? We'll listen to you. This was always meant to be a safe place. Have a question about your phone? Ask and you might get a great answer. We're here for each other.

From about 2009-2011 whitenoise grew to be a very popular hangout. I would guess there were well more than 50 regular folk in here and hundreds of people passed through daily. Without getting into details, whitenoise has been in a bit of a lull since they hay days of yesteryear but, I think that Kinja's recent release makes this a time ripe for a resurgence. If things work out here like they did on Jalopnik, post something really neat and the editors may notice and report you to the front page. You could be famous! No promises though.

For a while, I was posting a morning post under the heading "Roll Call!". I got a bit sidetracked there but perhaps I'll take it up again soon. If so, I encourage you to stop by at any time of the day and make a comment -any comment. It's a neat way to watch the place grow again. I tend to build these a few days out and schedule them to publish at 7am EST. Oh, some of you may be wondering "Who the hell are you anyway?" Just some guy who'd like to see whitenoise come back to life again. I'm not an employee of Gawker or attached to them in any official manner. I'm just another one of you folks.

So here's the important question: How do YOU contribute? Well, start by leaving a comment below and let me know you want in. There are a few of us around who can grant you authorship rights -and take them away if you get too unruly. I'd like to see as many of you submitting threads as possible. So switch on and be heard.

Oil falls below $94 a barrel after supplies rise

BANGKOK (AP) ? The price of oil fell below $94 a barrel Thursday after a survey showed crude inventories on the increase.

Benchmark oil for June delivery was down 38 cents to $93.92 a barrel at midday Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 9 cents to finish at $94.30 a barrel on the Nymex on Wednesday.

A report released by the American Petroleum Institute said U.S. crude supplies for the week ending May 10 rose 181,000 barrels to 390.2 million from the prior week. Ample supplies and predictions of tepid global growth have kept crude prices muted.

The outlook for the global economy took a punch Wednesday with the release of data showing Germany, while avoiding recession in the first three months of the year, grew a mere 0.1 percent. Traders had expected to see a 0.3 percent expansion of Europe's biggest economy.

"With recovery optimists so dependent on the occasional glimpse of sunlight from Germany, their miss was particularly disappointing," said Toby Morris, senior sales trader at CMC Markets, in an email commentary.

Brent crude, a benchmark for many international oil varieties, fell 32 cents to $103.18 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline fell 0.4 cent to $2.844 a gallon.

? Heating oil fell 1 cent to $2.87 a gallon.

? Natural gas lost 0.1 cent to $4.069 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Cops describes 'bombshell' of finding kidnapped women

CLEVELAND (AP) ? One of the first officers at the scene where three women were held captive in a Cleveland house for about a decade says the emotion of the moment was overwhelming.

Officer Anthony Espada, in response to a request from top police brass, wrote down his recollections of what happened May 6, an account that was posted on a Cleveland police department blog.

"Everybody was in the right place. It couldn't have gotten any better than that, that day," Espada wrote. "I don't feel like a hero. I'm just glad I was there, you know, just making sure they were safe. I feel so happy for them."

The officers went to the home knowing they might find long-missing Amanda Berry. Radio dispatchers told them a 911 caller had identified herself as Berry and said, "I'm free now."

Driving up to the home, Espada recalled, "We see this girl. She's like raising her hand, holding a child. I'm looking at my partner, 'Is it her?'

"He said, 'I can't tell.' We were pulling up closer and as soon as we pull up, my partner was driving, so she came up to the driver's side. He looked up at me and he's like, 'It is her.'"

That moment was overwhelming emotionally, Espada said. Then came another surprise as the officers weighed the possibility that Berry's captor was inside the house.

"We figured he might possibly be in the house because she kept pointing at the house. My partner asked if anyone was still inside. She said, 'Yes. Gina DeJesus and another girl.' And it was like another bombshell with overwhelming force just hit me."

The officers went into the house and quickly found Michelle Knight.

"She kinda popped out into ... the doorway and paused there for a second. I mean, within moments she came charging at me. She jumped onto me ... She's like, 'You saved us! You saved us!'"

Then DeJesus appeared from another bedroom.

"I just look at her," Espada recalled. "You can immediately tell who it is ... and I asked her, 'What's your name?' She said, 'My name is Georgina DeJesus.' Very overwhelming. I mean it took everything to hold myself together."

Espada radioed the details. "We found them! We found them!"

The officer said he replays the scene in his mind every day.

The three women had been held captive since they disappeared between 2002 and 2004, when they were in their teens or early 20s, authorities said.

Castro, a 52-year-old former school bus driver, has been charged with four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape. His attorney has not returned messages seeking comment.

Castro has been jailed on $8 million bond.

He is under close scrutiny behind bars, on suicide watch and monitored every 10 minutes with mandatory reporting of all movements to a shift sergeant, according to jail logs. The logs, obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press through a records request, also indicate two guards must accompany him anytime he's out of his cell.

"Castro is a high profile inmate; very high media attention," notes a handwritten entry on Friday.

Castro has spent most of the last few days lying on a mat in his cell or on his bunk, occasionally walking around the cell and once staring in the mirror, the logs show. He's had Kool-Aid at least twice, complained he was cold when he first arrived Thursday and said he had a headache on Sunday. The same day guards had to stop him using loose strings from the mat to floss his teeth.

The women's rescue unfolded last week when Berry broke out part of a locked outer door and yelled to neighbors to help her escape and call police. She fled into the street holding a 6-year-old daughter fathered by Castro.

The girl was born Christmas Day 2006, delivered by Knight in a kiddie pool so the cleanup would be easy. Knight said she was ordered by Castro under threat of death to deliver the baby live.

Knight said she miscarried five times when Castro starved her and repeatedly punched her stomach.

Castro was arrested at a nearby fast-food restaurant the same night that the women escaped.

U.S. oil boom leaves OPEC sidelined from demand growth

By Dmitry Zhdannikov and Christopher Johnson

LONDON (Reuters) - Rising U.S. shale oil production will help meet most of the world's new oil demand in the next five years, even if the global economy picks up steam, leaving little room for OPEC to lift output without risking lower prices, the West's energy agency said.

The prediction by the International Energy Agency (IEA) came in its closely watched semi-annual report, which analyses mid-term global oil supply and demand trends.

"North America has set off a supply shock that is sending ripples throughout the world," IEA Executive Director Maria van der Hoeven said on Tuesday.

"The good news is that this is helping to ease a market that was relatively tight for several years," she added. Oil on Tuesday traded near $103 a barrel, well below its peak of $147 in 2008.

The IEA said it expected global demand to rise 8 percent on aggregate between 2012 and 2018 to reach 96.7 million barrels per day (bpd) based on a fairly optimistic assumption by the International Monetary Fund of 3 to 4.5 percent global economic growth a year during the period.

That incremental demand will be met mainly by non-OPEC production, which will rise by more than 10 percent between 2012 and 2018 to 59.31 million bpd, the IEA said, increasing its estimate of non-OPEC supply in 2017 by 1 million bpd versus its previous report in October 2012.

The United States will overtake Russia as the world's largest non-OPEC producer as early as 2015, the IEA said.

That may leave OPEC, which had been long seen as the last resort for the world to meet rising demand, with output fluctuating around the current levels of 30 million bpd for the next five years.

The agency cut its estimate of the demand for OPEC crude in 2017 to 29.99 million bpd, down by 1.22 million bpd from its previous report six months ago.

It said OPEC's spare capacity will rise by over a quarter to reach 6.4 million bpd or 6.6 percent of global demand, giving an additional cushion to potential supply shocks, the report said.

The adoption of U.S. shale technology could help Russia and China boost production from unconventional reserves, but new projects may slow in other areas.

"Several members of the (OPEC) producer group face new hurdles, notably in North and sub-Saharan Africa. The regional fallout from the 'Arab Spring' is taking a toll on investment and capacity growth," the IEA said.

"Downward adjustments across the (OPEC) group are partly offset by substantially stronger growth in Saudi capacity than previously expected, reflecting newly announced development projects," it added.

Iran's sustainable crude production capacity is likely to fall by as much as 1 million bpd to 2.38 million bpd by 2018, the lowest in many decades, due to Western sanctions, the IEA said.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^>

    EUROPEAN REFINERS AT RISK

The IEA said the balance of global supply growth, until recently evenly split between OPEC and non-OPEC, was tilting towards the latter.

"North America thus increases its share of supply growth both within the non-OPEC group and more globally," it added.

In every other aspect of the supply chain, be it demand, refining, trade or storage and transportation, the fast rise of emerging market and developing economies is striking, it said.

These economies are projected to overtake advanced economies in oil product consumption from the second quarter of 2013. This lead will widen from 49 percent of global demand in 2012 to more than 54 percent by 2018.

The IEA said that beyond the well known story of growth in Brazil, China, Russia, India, Saudi Arabia and South Africa, many African nations were also on the rise on the global oil consumption map.

The IEA also predicted shifts in the global refining industry as countries such as India and Saudi Arabia build new refining capacity.

The expansion of global refining capacity will outpace upstream supply growth as well as demand growth, bringing refining margins under pressure. Higher-cost refineries will face stronger competition.

"European refineries are at particularly high risk of closure over the forecast period," the IEA said.

The IEA added that another consequence of the surge in U.S. production was a shift in natural gas pricing, which would challenging the conventional wisdom that products produced from oil will continue to dominate the market for transport fuels.

"Cheap and abundant natural gas has already facilitated the transition of the U.S. economy towards broader use of the fuel," the agency said. Natural gas will increase its share of road transport fuels to 2.5 percent in 2018 from 1.4 percent in 2010, it forecast.
