LONDON (Reuters) - Rapper Jay-Z has reached the top of the British album charts for the first time with his new release "Magna Carta...Holy Grail", sales figures showed on Sunday.
The hip hop artist knocked the English folk rock band Mumford & Sons off the number one spot, according to the Official Charts Company, which compiles the weekly rundown.
Jay-Z's new album features guest appearances by his wife Beyonce and singer Justin Timberlake. Seven of his previous albums have entered the British top 40, but none had reached the number one position, the compiler said.
He saw off a challenge from Scottish veteran Rod Stewart, whose album "Time" climbed three places to number two.
The English folk rock band Passenger took third place with "All the Little Lights".
On the singles chart, American R&B singer Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" took the number one spot, displacing British soul singer John Newman's "Love Me Again".
Swedish DJ Sebastian Ingrosso was the highest new entry, at number three, with the dance hit "Reload".

Stay off the roads! The "Golden Sisters" are learning how to drive again in the show's season finale, and TODAY.com has an exclusive look at the white-knuckle event.
It's been almost 40 years since Mary has driven, but Josie and Terry have convinced their sister to get behind the wheel again and renew her long-expired driver's license. But as the clip shows, Mary's driving lesson is hardly smooth with her two constant companions in the car.
"You know, I'm really nervous driving the car with my backseat sisters ... telling me how to drive," Mary admits to the cameras. "For sure I'm going to crash!"
With Josie and Terry screaming for Mary to turn the steering wheel this way and that, to hit the brakes and generally freaking out during the lesson, it's no wonder the practically new driver is nervous. But the backseat sisters have reason to worry too.
When Terry advises Mary to "put her signal on," Mary replies, "What's a signal?"
Fortunately, there were no collisions and little damage -- except to a few garbage bins, a curb and a probably their Jaguar's hubcabs.
The season finale of "Golden Sisters" airs Saturday at 9 p.m. on OWN.

If you tried to download Jay-Z's new album Magna Carta Holy Grail through the free promotional app for Samsung phones last week, chances are you'll have run into issues. Around launch time on Jul. 4 many users reported that the app was slow, unresponsive and crashy as servers became overwhelmed with fans trying to download the album.
And the app problems haven't escaped the attention of Jay-Z himself. According to the NY Daily News, the artist mentioned in a radio interview that he was aware of the launch-night issues, saying the situation was "not cool."

MEDAN, Indonesia (AP) ? Authorities were searching for scores of inmates, including terrorists, who escaped a crowded Indonesian prison that was still burning Friday after prisoners set fires and started a deadly riot at the facility in the nation's third-largest city.
Thousands of policemen and soldiers are deployed around Tanjung Gusta prison to blockade roads linking Medan, the capital of North Sumatra, to other provinces were blockaded while fire brigades were battling the fires.
About 200 prisoners escaped following the riot late Thursday in which three prison employees and two inmates were killed.
Officers deployed to hunt the escaped inmates have re-arrested 55 of them and still searching for remaining inmates who still at large, said local police chief in Lt. Col. Nico Afinta. Three of 22 convicted terrorists have been recaptured.
He said the prison employees who died, including a woman, were trapped and killed in an office building that was burned by prisoners during late Thursday's riot.
The riot appeared to have been triggered by a power blackout that knocked out water pumps, leaving inmates without water since Thursday morning.
Inmates forced their way out from the prison while others set offices on fire and held about 15 officers captive inside the prison, prison directorate spokesman Akbar Hadi said. None of the hostages was still being held Friday morning.
The facility holds nearly 2,600 prisoners while its normal capacity is 1,500, Hadi said.
Witnesses said gunshots were heard from inside the prison, and television footage showed security forces carrying a white body bag into an ambulance from the burning prison. The fire sent raging orange flames jumping several meters (yards) into the air and a huge column of black smoke billowing over the jail.
Hadi estimated about 500 inmates were resisting calls to stop the riot and said an evacuation was planned for the safety of inmates who could become hostages as tensions showed no signs of easing.
Vice Minister of justice Denny Indrayana, who is in Medan overseeing the operation, has requested evacuation of all inmates and appealed those remain escape to give themselves to the authorities.
"Legal action will be taken to chase them, and tougher action will be applied to those who refuse to surrender," Indrayana said.
No further information was available on injuries.

Implementing GST on overseas online shopping purchases would be near impossible to do without adding costs and inconvenience to buyers, Customs Minister Maurice Williamson says.
Inland Revenue and Customs have agreed to set up a joint working party to investigate whether and how GST could be levied on purchases worth less than $400.
The initiative was kicked off partly out of concern from local retailers, who have said they were having to compete with overseas web businesses on an uneven playing field, as well as the huge growth of internet shopping.
Would you still shop online if purchases under $400 were taxed? Have your say below using your Facebook login.
While supporting the investigation, Mr Williamson believed implementing a tax on foreign goods seamlessly was problematic.
"The one thing we do not want to do is add unbelievable compliance costs or disruption and delays for people being able to get their goods.
"If we were to bring it in, we would want to have it seamlessly electronic and just a charge to their account."
Mr Williamson said many other countries had not yet been able to solve the issue of taxing online shopping.
"I know of a lot that are grappling with the problem and saying, 'we don't know how to deal with this'.
"It might be that the world of technology has finally exempted governments and their ability to tax people."
Retailers Association chief executive John Albertson believed with the appropriate legislation, the additional tax could be imposed through the electronic payment process.
"To be able to introduce the collection process through the payment process is reasonably straight forward," he told TV ONE's Breakfast.
Mr Albertson said New Zealand retailers had a very low profitability margin despite the high Kiwi dollar, and believed adding the tax would help provide a level playing field against international markets.
"If you look at the statistics, in terms of the profitability of retail in New Zealand, the net profit sales ratio for retailers across the whole market is 3%.
"If you've got a $1m business, you'll make $30,000. I wouldn't get out of bed for that much."
Intangible goods
The Customs Minister said experts would investigate possible solutions to taxing overseas purchases, and the department would report back to Cabinet if there was a mechanism they believed worked.
"I think it's going to be very hard to even know what people bought overseas, what they paid for it and how they paid for it, and hence how you clip the ticket along the way.
"There is also a lot of intangible goods people buy on the internet as well - they buy music, they buy videos, they buy software, and we don't even get to see those in customs.
"So how do you tax those? Well, you can't."
GST is currently only levied on overseas purchases worth more than $400 because of the cost collection. A lower "de minimus" applies to some goods that still attract duty such as jewellery and clothes.
Shipments with a value higher than the de minimus also attract a flat-rate Import Entry Transaction Fee of $38.07.
That fee will rise to $46.89 at the end of the month when Customs is due to launch the $89 million first tranche of its new computer system, the Joint Border Management System (JBMS).

Because my imagination is trapped within the confines of my human pea brain, I always giggle to myself when I see dogs sniff anything and everything they run into. But dogs have 50 times more olfactory cells than we do! Of course they would put it to good use. And of course our human pea brains would put a dog's nose to good use in finding bombs. How do we train man's best friends to find explosives?
Smithsonian Mag has a in-depth piece about the education of explosive detection canines (or EDCs or really, just bomb dogs) that is just fascinating. It takes a look at how, why and for what MSA Security, an elite academy, trains its dogs.
Most of the dogs that go through MSA Security's school are a year to a year and a half old (having spent their first year training in Puppies Behind Bars). The dogs are trained to sniff different items like luggage, suitcases, bicycles, cars, concrete blocks and more?the idea is to train where the dog should smell for things just as much as what they're smelling for. Smithsonian Mag says:
Strictly speaking, the dog doesn?t smell the bomb. It deconstructs an odor into its components, picking out just the culprit chemicals it has been trained to detect. Roberts likes to use the spaghetti sauce analogy. ?When you walk into a kitchen where someone is cooking spaghetti sauce, your nose says aha, spaghetti sauce. A dog?s nose doesn?t say that. Instinctively, it says tomatoes, garlic, rosemary, onion, oregano.? It?s the handler who says tomato sauce, or, as it happens, bomb.
Impressive! The dogs gain their understanding of smells by sniffing identical cans in a grid. Stuff that is associated with explosives (dynamite, TNT, Semtex, powders, component in C4, etc.) are put in random cans and the dog is instructed to sit down when it smells such chemicals. It works better than anything! The government has tried to build robots to do a dog's job but it's pretty hard to invent something better than a dog. Their nose extends from the nostril to the back of the throat, they differentiate breathing and smelling and 35% of a dog's brain is assigned for smelling while humans only have 5% set aside for smell. They're smelling machines.
Smithsonian Mag discovered that the best dog breeds for becoming bomb dogs are German Shepherds, Belgian Shepherds and Labrador Retrievers. Golden Retrievers are actually the best smellers but they're too smart to go through bomb sniffing school. In any case, the bomb dogs usually work for 8 or 9 years with the same handler. It's an elite gig. You can read more about bomb dogs and their success stories here. Trust me, you'll enjoy it. [Smithsonian Mag, Image Credit: Reed Young]

From July 11 to 13 at New York Live Arts, Modern American Dance Company (MADCO) from St. Louis, MO will perform "MADCO performs MILLS/works," an evening of dances choreographed by former company member Joseph Mills. Mills performed with MADCO from 1981-1987. Subsequently, he was a member of MOMIX and The Erick Hawkins Dance Company and has performed and choreographed independently since 1990. Since 2000, he has frequently returned to St. Louis to create works for MADCO. In this program, MADCO will offer three of his works, one being a world premiere, and an audience favorite danced by Mr. Mills that was choreographed by Alan Boeding.
The four-part evening is a major step for Mr. Mills in New York. Though he has years of significant performance experience, most his choreography presented in New York has been limited to small group, duet and solo works, in small venues with less theatrical capability than is often possible outside NYC. This performance will be the largest presentation of his work since he relocated to New York in 2008. It will include movement, text, music and visual design. The end result will be a unique combination of abstract movement and evocative, thought provoking imagery.
"Selkie's Song" (working title), the world premiere, is derived from selkie myths of Celtic lore. Dancers play with gravity, create illusions of weightlessness and weave a narrative that ranges from self-indulgence to melancholic longing to playful, joyful celebration. The design by Joseph Mills includes shimmering curtains reflecting light, reminiscent of light gleaming on the surface of water. Costumes are by Tim Kent. The piece is performed to Celtic music performed by cellist Barry Phillips and by the Celtic fusion group Flook. It showcases MADCO's versatility as both theatrical storytellers and dancer/athletes of the highest level.
"Reflections in the Well of Solace," created by Mills in 2001, is a meditation on grief and transformation that was, in part, a response to the tragedies of 9/11. Mills was scheduled to create a new work for the company at a time when the entire country was riveted by the horrifying WTC attacks. This work emerged as a healing act with the dancers, reconstructing movements of unspeakable grief and transforming them into movements of healing, even joy. The set includes two pools of water, designed in 2001 by Mr. Mills, which predated by many years the design of the WTC memorial in lower Manhattan. Its music, by St. Louis composer Michael Hunt, is a lush and theatrical orchestral score for chamber orchestra.
"Getting Lucky: Secret Moments in the Natural World" (2012) is a musing on the world of animal documentaries. It imagines a zany menagerie of exotic creatures and their sexual proclivities. The stage design, based on giant leaves, is by Joseph Mills. There is a sound score comprised of a text written and performed by Alan Wade that is underscored by a wide variety of music, creating the effect of a PBS nature documentary.
"Circle Walker," danced by Mills, was an audience favorite in early MOMIX shows. Choreographed by Alan Boeding, is features Mills as sort of human gyroscope inside an eleven-foot moving sculpture by Boeding. It shows Mills "encased inside a revolving sculpture, hanging on, leaning forward, and swinging about with the greatest of ease" (Jack Anderson, NY Theatre Wire).
ABOUT MADCO:
MADCO (www.madcodance.com), currently under the Executive and Artistic Directorship of Stacy West, was founded in 1976 by Alcine Wiltz and Ross Winter as a vehicle to provide an opportunity for professional dancers to live and work in the Midwest while also providing dance performances by local artists and educational programs for the community. Over the years the company's mission has evolved to encompass a wider scope choreographically, attracting dancers and choreographers from around the country to create innovative and memorable dance performances combining passion and technical excellence to provide its audiences with a world-class arts experience.
The company is known for its versatile and athletic style, presenting dance that is exciting for audiences to watch and demanding for dancers to perform. Since 2007, MADCO has been the professional company in residence is at the Touhill Performing Arts Center (TPAC) on the campus of University of Missouri St. Louis. The company presents a concert season at TPAC, extensive education and residency programs and community outreach that reaches over 30,000 people annually. Dance International Magazine described MADCO as "a company with flat-out physicality and exacting discipline while never forgetting the entertainment value..."
ABOUT JOSEPH MILLS:
Joseph Mills grew up on a farm in Illinois, where he discovered dance through the visual arts and a passionate curiosity for gymnastics. In 1982, he earned a BFA in visual arts with an emphasis in sculpture and drawing from Southern Illinois University, where he also began studying dance with Alcine Wiltz. He performed and choreographed with MADCO from 1981 to 1987, touring throughout the central United States.
In 1987, Mills joined, and became a principal dancer with MOMIX Dance Theater. During his tenure with MOMIX, Mills collaborated on several choreographic projects with Director Moses Pendleton and toured extensively throughout the U.S., South America, Europe and Asia until 1990. Thereafter, he continued as a guest artist with the company until 1995. He joined the Erick Hawkins Dance Company as a principal dancer and worked with the company from 1990-94. In his last year with the company, he worked closely with Mr. Hawkins as Choreographic Associate on a commissioned dance, "Many Thanks."
Mills earned a doctorate from Temple University in 1998 (his dissertation dealt with Pilobolus) and has since, in addition to performing, taught at George Washington University and the Dance Program at Northwestern University, where he was Program Director from 2002-08. As a guest artist, he has choreographed and performed in Norway, Brazil, St. Louis, and Washington D.C. "Mills/works," an evening of works by and for Mills, was presented at The Kennedy Center. He has been a guest artist with Wellspring Dance Company in Michigan, with The Erick Hawkins Dance Company in NY, with former Hawkins colleague Catherine Tharin, and with Heidi Latsky Dance (current). Since 2008, he has been on the faculty of Queens College-CUNY. In 2012, he formed his own company, Mills/works Dance (http://millsworksdance.com), and offered "Questions About Angels," an evening-length suite of four works, at Theater for the New City. It was the first full length work that he had both choreographed and designed.
Mills has choreographed and contributed to over 40 dance works over the past 30 years. His work is informed by his strong visual arts background and his equally strong fascination with somatic and movement studies. He cites The Erick Hawkins Company and MOMIX as his main creative influences, saying he fully embraces Hawkins' technical approach to movement while being very influenced by the athleticism and accessibility of MOMIX. He strives to balance these qualities in his own work, aiming for dances that are as intriguing in their poetry as they are in their physical and technical prowess.
"MADCO performs MILLS/works" will be danced by the company of MADCO, which includes company members Monica Alunday, Elyse Andersen, R. Vance Baldwin, Brandon Fink, Jason Flodder, Lindsay Hawkins, Claire Hilleren, Jeffrey Mitchell, Jennifer Reilly and Nicole R. Whitesell, and apprentices Belicia Beck and Alexandra Davie.
MADCO's presentation of MADCO performs MILLS/works at New York Live Arts is made possible through New York Live Arts' Theater Access Program. The Theater Access Program is a comprehensive subsidized rental program benefiting a diverse group of dance and theater companies and producing organizations. (www.newyorklivearts.org).
MILLS/works will run from July 11 through 13 at 219 W 19th Street, NYC 10011. Tickets cost $22 for general admission, and $18 for students and New York Live Arts Members. To contact the box office, call (212) 924-0077, or visit https://tickets.newyorklivearts.org.

The goal of the program is to produce graduates that are holistically developed Filipinos with 21st Century skills and are prepared for higher education, middle-level skills development, employment and entrepreneurship. This ensures that even if the student doesn't choose to go to college, he/she will finish studying what is basic wherein human resources departments would no longer ask for college degree as a minimum requirement for employment.
The K to 12 Program as a whole is definitely excellent and in the long run has a significant role for producing globally competitive graduates. This program has its own advantages and disadvantages that can be perceived as subject for criticism just like any other prior programs. Every Filipinos have split opinions and insights about the implementation of K to 12 program by the Philippine government.
First and foremost, the implementation of the program itself. Are we ready for the K to 12? Considering all the preparations and necessary aspects, from the physical structure to the human resources? There are many problems in the Philippine education scene that needed much attention and long-term solutions first. Such problems are being addressed for a long time already. Build additional and conducive classrooms, improve teaching quality, renovate old schools, provide the necessary needs (textbooks, instructional materials, facilities and equipments, etc.) or do whatever is needed to be accomplished in order for the quality of education to be restored. Isn't it too premature to start this program? I strongly believe that K-12 will only work better if the overall quality of education here will be improved to a much competitive level first. However, it's implemented already all over the Philippine archipelago.
As a Grade 7 teacher and first implementer of this program, I have positive and negative views especially with regards to references, time (lessons pacing), grading system and lesson planning. The following contents are my actual observations and comments on the K to 12 program.
A. Textbook and other References
- there is no definite reference (textbook) for supplementing the lesson
- the production of modules or graphic organizers for activity/output is expensive and sometimes will be shouldered by the teacher considering the financial status of the students (especially for graphic organizers that are complicated and not easy for the students to copy; if copying is to be insisted, the whole period will be consumed just doing one activity.
- until this time, it would be the 2nd year since its implementation, the modules and teaching guide of some other subjects like English, Science, are not yet completed.
B. Time Allotment (specifically for Values Education subject)
- the time is very limited and short, given only 2 hours for SEC and SPA curricula and one hour for STEVEP and Science Curricula, every week for a lengthy and long topic suggested every module, there is always delayed and catching up of lessons with time constraint.
C. Lesson Planning
- in reference to the letter B comment, I encountered problem in my lesson plan since the suggested time frame from the Teacher's Guide cannot be realized because of the time/schedule of my class which is only once or twice a week.
- from our training, we were given a format on how to do the lesson planning but having my short time, I must innovate and modify my lesson plan just to realize the coverage expected from me
D. Grading System
- the grading system from numerical was changed to letter grade.
- the assessment process is holistic, it is standards-based. The philosophy behind the new system is that assessment shall be used primarily Under the standards-based assessment, as a quality assurance tool to track student progress in the attainment of standards, promote self-reflection and personal accountability for one's learning, and a provide a basis for the profiling of student performance. Under the standards-based assessment, promotion and retention of students shall be by subject. It's clear that unit per subject is not anymore counted to promote or retained the student. Hence, there are no definite criteria, standard on the basis of promotion more especially in retention.
Finally, I'm not saying that K to 12 system is totally a nixed idea, as it worked on our neighbouring countries. However, I strongly believe that K-12 will only work better if the overall quality of education here will be improved to a much competitive level first. As cited by the Department of Education in defense of the K to 12 Program, the Philippines must lengthen secondary education by two years in order to comply with "international standards" set by treaties such as the Bologna Process and the Washington Accord; the government should take into consideration in improving the quality of basic education, building science education, scholarship, establishing centers for teachers continuing education to realize and attain the vision to K to 12 Program which is to produce graduates that are holistically developed Filipinos with 21st Century skills and are prepared for higher education, middle-level skills development, employment and entrepreneurship.

PAMPLONA, Spain (AP) ? Thousands of daredevils raced through the streets of the northern Spanish city of Pamplona in a hair-raising but relatively clean second bull run of the famed annual San Fermin festival.
Navarra Hospital chief Javier Sesma said there were no gorings in the run Monday and four people were treated in city hospitals for injuries suffered in falls.
The early morning race, which sees thrill-seekers dashing alongside six fighting bulls, lasted just over two minutes.
The nine-day fiesta immortalized in Ernest Hemingway's novel "The Sun Also Rises" is one of Spain's main tourist attractions.

Whales flee from the loud military sonar used by navies to hunt submarines, new research has proven for the first time. The studies provide a missing link in the puzzle that has connected naval exercises around the world to unusual mass strandings of whales and dolphins.
Beaked whales, the most common casualty of the strandings, were shown to be highly sensitive to sonar. But the research also revealed unexpectedly that blue whales, the largest animals on Earth and whose population has plummeted by 95% in the last century, also abandoned feeding and swam rapidly away from sonar noise.
The strong response observed in the beaked whales occurred at noise levels well below those allowed for US navy exercises. ?This result has to be taken into consideration by regulators and those planning naval exercises,? said Stacy DeRuiter, at the University of St Andrews in Scotland, who led one of the teams.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) -- Thousands of people turned out for a Saturday concert benefiting Oklahoma tornado victims.
The star-studded concert featuring Oklahoma natives Toby Keith and Garth Brooks was sold out, with officials estimating a crowd of nearly 65,000, the Tulsa World reported (http://bit.ly/12NCAvn ).
The money raised from ticket sales benefits the United Way of Central Oklahoma. That organization has established a fund to aid victims of the tornadoes and violent storms that pummeled the state in May and killed dozens of people.
A separate benefit concert last month hosted by Oklahoma native country music star Blake Shelton raised more than $6 million in donations and pledges.
Saturday?s concert was organized by Keith, who was slated to perform later Saturday.
Brooks, meanwhile, took to the stage Saturday afternoon at the Oklahoma Twister Relief Concert at the University of Oklahoma?s Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.
?Today the healing begins,? he said.
Brooks played ?Two of a Kind, Workin? on a Full House? and ?Papa Loved Mama.? His wife, Trisha Yearwood, joined him for a duet, ?In Another?s Eyes.?
?God bless you, Oklahoma!? Yearwood yelled, according to the World.
Some concertgoers said their experiences with tornadoes or someone affected by the recent storms drew them to the fund-raising event.
Marie Carter, a physician whose office is in Oklahoma City, said she watched helplessly as a twister moved through Moore, coming within a half-mile of her own home.
?It was very scary for a lot of us,? Carter said, according to the World. ?We?ve been out there helping our friends, digging through the rubble, and because we?re so close, we?ve had a lot of patients come in who lost everything who have symptoms of PTSD. It?s almost surreal, but we wanted to come out and support this cause.?

When The Drum meets with Maurice Levy, long-time CEO of international marketing group Publicis, it is in the shade of the sun-soaked terrace of the Majestic Hotel on La Croisette in Cannes. He is straight off stage having interviewed Heineken CEO Jean-Francois Van Boxmeer and its chief marketing officer Alexis Nasard during a keynote interview at the Festival venue La Palais. So recognisable and connected a figure is Levy, that sitting next to the entrance to the terrace, a number of people walk buy and stop to say hello, including Philip Thomas, CEO of the festival itself.?It?s always the same kind of ambiance,? explains Levy, of his annual interviews at the festival. ?I?m trying to do some very serious things and I?m trying to tackle some very serious issues in a very nice way with warmth and empathy in order to connect with the audience as well as the interviewees who I also want to be seen as the heroes, while I am not.?
This rings true for a man who carries huge gravitas and takes himself seriously, but does so with a warmth and charm that is surely one of the reasons his board is so keen for him to remain, despite his clear intention to retire.
Levy is reluctant to discuss his views on what the sponsors of the upcoming Brazilian World Cup and Olympic Games should do in reaction to the Brazilian riots currently taking place, having spent the past two days travelling, so The Drum quickly moves to a subject he knows all too well ? Publicis Groupe.
He discusses his time at the company in a forthright manner, offering his view on the major changes he has witnessed in both the group and the industry over his four decades since joining at its director of IT.
?In 1971, television was the nascent, burgeoning media for advertising in France. People were queuing to get space.
They were making reservations a year ahead. If you were not asking for space in June there was no way that you would get your ad running on TV that year.?
Those times have well and truly changed with traditional media outlets now struggling to find advertisers as a result of the competition for marketing spend as a result of media fragmentation, but Levy believes that the need to build around emotion remains the same.
He also believes that the industry is beginning to come full circle, with full service agencies being rebuilt to include the ever expanding digital services that have appeared on the scene in recent years, and that the impact of mobile is forthright in that evolution.
?Everything has changed: the structure of the agency, the position of the advertiser, the media landscape, and the behaviour of the consumers due to the fact that the consumer is using mobile communications much more in how they organise themselves,? he says.
Levy highlights the global growth of Publicis and the expansion of client needs internationally, which has meant a change of strategy and thinking across different regions, describing the Japanese and Koreans as ?proactively building? as they see their economies grow.
?You go to China and everything you have learned about Europe has to be erased from your brain because the Chinese market is very different and the positioning that you can have here is irrelevant for the Chinese market because you are competing on a different level, with different brands and different behaviours and you are talking to and selling to an
audience which is extremely different, with different views and interests.?
The conversation moves to his plans for retirement, on which he has set a firm deadline of 31 December 2015, and why Publicis has struggled to find a successor. He offers two reasons, highlighting the same problem of Sir Martin Sorrell at WPP and John Wren at Omnicom, who have also ?changed the competitive landscape? while building their organisations around them, leaving them deeply entrenched in all aspects of their global empires.
?It is something which is really very different from the old traditional agency where somebody was groomed to succeed,? Levy states, having clearly spent a lot of time considering this conundrum.
?We are builders and entrepreneurs,? he says of the three, but adds that Interpublic Group could also be included.
?I am the only one who has been running an agency, managing accounts, winning clients and presenting adverts. It?s a combination which is quite rare,? he declares in comparison with his peers.
Levy continues to his second reason, stating that the boards each have a level of trust in their leader, having been, in Levy?s own words ?so far, quite successful?.
On the matter of age, he adds: ?There is always the fact that the population is aging as people live longer, that the age of retirement is being postponed, so you can still function and it is quite a credible position for the board although a bit frustrating for the next wave who must wonder how long they must continue to wait while these old people stay.?
Despite this, he reiterates his desire to retire by the deadline and is adamant in his refusal to speculate over anyone who might be capable of taking over the running at any of the big marketing networks in the near future.
Asked about the recent data sharing deal with Twitter and media agency Starcom MediaVest, he is positive that it has so far been a success, and alludes to the similar deal made by rival WPP within a couple of months with the micro-blogging platform.
?We like to be the leaders so we are extremely pleased to see that we get the thinking about digital right and the digital economy and the digital industry has identified us as the people who are doing it well,? he adds.
Levy is proud of the interconnectivity between Publicis agencies, and tells The Drum that he loathes to see them compete against one another, despite his description of the industry as being full of ?individuals? who want to show what they are capable of and stand up for their points of view and ideas.
?We value very much this aspect, but at the same time, due to the complexity of our world we have to have more collaboration. This is something we are working on and it is a little more complicated because we don?t wish to emasculate our people by forcing them to do things that they don?t like.
?We love the idea that they can collaborate and we like the rebel spirit which is very often the one who can bring some disruption or thinking out of the box?We need to find the right balance and that is not something you can instruct, it is something that you have to monitor and manage in a way that is seen as friendly, amicable and collaborative.?
And with that, the interview is over. As Levy departs, none other than Sir Martin Sorrell enters the sunshine of the terrace, the two passing like ships in the night. Oh, the possibility.

BOSTON (AP) ? After the Boston Bruins failed to get Jarome Iginla at the trade deadline, they grabbed him in free agency.
The longtime Calgary Flames forward, who was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins in March, signed a one-year deal with the Bruins on Friday. The right wing will have a base salary of $1.8 million along with $4.2 million in available incentives, which gives him a $6 million salary cap charge.
The 36-year-old Iginla entered this past season having scored at least 30 goals 11 straight times. He registered 14 goals and 33 points in 44 games between Calgary and Pittsburgh, and then had four goals and eight assists in 15 postseason games with the Penguins.
In 1,232 NHL regular-season games, Iginla had 530 goals and 576 assists. He is 32nd on the NHL's career goal list and 57th with 1,106 points.
Iginla has added 32 goals and 29 assists in 69 career playoff games.
In other moves Friday, the Bruins signed goalie Chad Johnson to a one-year, $600,000 deal. Boston gave forward Bobby Robins a two-year, two-way contract; forward Nick Johnson a one-year, two-way deal; and defenseman Mike Moore a two-way, one-year contract.
Iginla spurned the Bruins' advances at the trade deadline in March and chose to go to Pittsburgh. He had a no-trade clause in the final year of his contract with Calgary and narrowed his list of teams he would accept a trade to when it was clear the Flames wanted to move him.
The Flames and Bruins agreed to a trade, but Iginla nixed it when he decided he wanted to play with Sidney Crosby and the Penguins instead.
Boston swept the Penguins in the Eastern Conference finals, but the Bruins will have a much different look next season than they did last month when they lost to Chicago in the Stanley Cup finals.
Nathan Horton signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday, and Tyler Seguin and Rich Peverley were traded to the Dallas Stars on Thursday.
Knowing he was losing Horton and not expecting Jaromir Jagr to return to Boston, Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said it was his goal to "reconstruct" the right side of his forward lines. Loui Eriksson was acquired in the deal with the Stars, and adding Iginla was the next step.
Iginla's contract is cap-friendly, counting just $1.8 million next season. If he achieves any or all of the performance bonuses, that will count against the 2014-15 cap.

?There was a recent report that Apple?s current ?Designed in California? ads were not a hit with consumers and various writers who reported on this urged Apple to change them and to start bringing out cool ads again,? Tim Bajarin writes for TechPinions. ?While the ads may not seem cool to some, for Apple these ads are very strategic and will run as long as it takes for Apple to hit home the message that the fruit of Apple?s labor starts here and regardless of where they are manufactured, these are American bred products.??Apple has been reading the tea leaves and has seen how Congress and many of the American people are going down a track to try and bring more manufacturing back to the US,? Bajarin writes. ?They also understand that creating US designed products will be more strategic to the USA?s long term vision of making the US much more relevant in a time of globalization.?
Bajarin writes, ?You may think that I am crazy suggesting this, but even Apple?s competitors are seeing that if the products are designed and manufactured over here that they may be seen more favorably by consumers. More importantly, it could give them favor with the US Government and the American people who are getting more and more concerned that the US is loosing its edge, especially to S. Korea and China.?

Before you head out tonight to capture the fun, here's some tips put together by National Geographic.
1. Turn off your flash and set your camera to manual mode and try this setting:?ISO 100, f/11, at 1/2 second. Adjust?shutter speed as needed. More details here.
2. Photographing fireworks means slow shutter speeds. That means it is best to use a tripod.
3.? If you want to zoom in and show detail, you'll want a zoom lens that goes to at least 200mm. It's best to play with zoom/focus settings earlier in the day, while its still light out.
4. If your camera supports bulb mode or timed exposures that can be a great way to shoot fireworks. More details here.
5. When shooting people, like a friend holding a sparkler, focus on the face not the sparkler to try and trick the light meter.
Here's a bunch more tips on photographing fireworks from the Digital Photography's School's Darren Rowse.

DUBAI (Reuters) - Gulf Arab states welcomed Egypt's interim leader on Thursday, hopeful his appointment would stem the rise of Islamists in the Middle East, but the military overthrow of an elected president drew a guarded response from Iran and condemnation from Turkey.
The United States expressed concern at the ouster of Mohamed Mursi on Wednesday and called for a swift return to democracy, as did the European Union. But they stopped short of calling it a coup, which might have led to sanctions.
The 54-nation African Union was likely to suspend Egypt for allowing "unconstitutional change", a senior AU source told Reuters.
For Gulf Arab states, which see Egypt as a strategic ally against any threat from non-Arab Iran across the Gulf, the appointment of constitutional court chief Adli Mansour as interim leader was met with congratulations and evident relief.
"We followed with all consideration and satisfaction the national consensus that your brotherly country is witnessing, and which had played a prominent role in leading Egypt peacefully out of the crisis it had faced," said the president of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahayan.
Kuwait's ruler, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah, was quoted as praising Egypt's armed forces for the "positive and historic role" they played in preserving stability.
"CRITICAL PERIOD"
Saudi King Abdullah sent a message of congratulations on Wednesday "in this critical period of ... history", and Qatar, the only Gulf Arab state that backed Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood, welcomed the new leader on Thursday.
The official Qatar news agency reported that cables of congratulation had been sent to Mansour by Qatar's new emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani.
Qatar has been a major financier of Islamist groups around the Arab World and had provided billions of dollars in aid to Egypt since the 2011 revolution that ended the autocratic rule of Hosni Mubarak.
Iran, which sought to repair its strained ties with Egypt after Mursi's election a year ago, gave a guarded response, calling for the people's "legitimate demands" to be fulfilled and warning of "foreign and enemy opportunism".
Mursi visited Tehran on one of his first official trips abroad, but the two countries have found themselves supporting opposite sides of a civil war in Syria that has taken on increasingly sectarian overtones.
"Certainly the resistant nation of Egypt will protect its independence and greatness from foreign and enemy opportunism during the difficult conditions that follow," Fars news agency quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Araqchi as saying.
Syria, fighting to crush a two-year-old uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, urged Mursi to step down on Wednesday and realize "that the overwhelming majority of the Egyptian people reject him", Information Minister Omran Zoabi was quoted as saying by state news agency SANA.
Neighboring Israel avoided any show of satisfaction over Mursi's ouster, although a confidant of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed hope Mansour's appointment would lead to the restoration of largely frozen contacts with Cairo.
"Yesterday's events strengthen the feeling that perhaps we have passed the bad period and perhaps now there will be a chance to have diplomatic ties with whomever will govern Egypt in the near future," Tzachi Hanegbi told Army Radio.
"ILLICIT MEANS"
Straddling the Middle East and Europe, Turkey was harshly critical of Egypt's army, saying its overthrow of Mursi was "unacceptable" - a marked difference from its would-be partners in the European Union, which avoided repeated questions on whether it was a military coup.
"It is unacceptable for a government that has come to power through democratic elections to be toppled through illicit means and, even more, a military coup," Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told reporters in Istanbul.
Turkey has a history of military coups and is run by a government with Islamist roots which has faced weeks of often violent protests.
Some Western countries were concerned about the overthrow. "The dismissal of the democratically elected President Mursi by the military is very questionable. Military intervention as a way to resolve conflicts in a democratic system is not acceptable," Austrian Deputy Chancellor and Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger said in a statement.
NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen said he was gravely concerned.
U.S. President Barack Obama stopped short of condemning the move. "I now call on the Egyptian military to move quickly and responsibly to return full authority back to a democratically elected civilian government as soon as possible through an inclusive and transparent process," he said in a statement.
