Get Leak-Proof Roofs from Professional Roofers in Kalamazoo

Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, you can't keep the elements from entering your home. Kalamazoo, Michigan is notorious for having one of the most extreme weather conditions in the United States. Because of this, Kalamazoo homeowners often face the problem of leaking roofs.

There is nothing worse than constantly mopping the floor because water keeps dripping from your roof. You normally place a bucket under the leak until the rain stops and then ignore the problem. But doing this won't stop your roof from leaking. If you think you can't fix your roof by yourself, hire a professional to do the job.

In Kalamazoo there are several home improvement contractors that offer a wide variety of services including roofing. These roofers are highly skilled when it comes to waterproofing roofs and installing roof gutters or fixing them. Hiring them will assure you of more professional workmanship that can finally solve your roof problem.

Aside from having extensive knowledge on roofing, they also have the necessary equipment and materials to get the job done right. Most of these companies are affiliated with the country's top roofing material manufacturers, so they use only high quality materials for their roof service projects. Given the primary function of the roof in your house, you have to make sure any repair or replacement is done right.

If you just opted for a quick patch job on your roof, then chances are you'll be needing that bucket again when the rains come. Kalamazoo roofing companies can advice you on what needs to be done with your roof. They can offer a free assessment to check where the problem is, a cost estimate of the project, and a time-line of how soon the repairs will be finished. They can also give helpful suggestions on how you can keep your roof in good condition.

Home improvement contractors can also assist you if you plan to give your home or some areas of it a makeover. Aside from roofs, many Kalamazoo windows are also affected by extreme weather changes. These contractors can suggest appropriate windows for your house that can withstand harsh elements; they can even teach you proper window care. Replacing your windows can increase the value of your home and even make it look better. Combined with a leak-free roof, well-maintained windows take you one step closer to the perfect house.

Kalamazoo roofing and window replacement and repair are offered by several home improvement contractors in the area. If you want to know more about roofs and home improvement, you can discuss these with them or you can read about roofing projects from myroofingservices.net and builderbill-diy-help.com.

Career advice for confused old male 26 years: Q & A?

Baysoc23 Question ? career advice for confused old male 26 years
I am 26 years old, graduated in Poly. Sci and Japanese out of college. I taught English abroad for a year, now I work in an embassy, ??but I look at a computer for eight hours a day and I know it is not my vocation. I do not know what I do with my life. It seems that most people who majored in what I specialize in going to law school or graduate. Everywhere I look people my age, you get married, settle down, buy homes, and just generally being successful. I know I want to go back to school, but I do not know what I want to do yet. I like working with people and I also love being outdoors. Money is not a huge deal for me as I can live comfortably and support my family when I have one. I thought back to school to get a nursing degree, master?s or possibly public health, although I have to take some courses in bio. I am also passionate about the environment. Should I go back and get another single or is it a waste of time? Advice? Best answer:
Answer by jessica

I would go for a masters in international business or human resource management ? you have a great base that just needs a little tweaking. I would not single. Your basic degree is not one that would allow for much more, but outdoors with working with people. You get into a position that requires some travel so you can see over there until you meet the right one.

Marine faces boot for anti-Obama Facebook posts

A Marine sergeant who started a Facebook group that is openly critical of President Barack Obama and posted comments saying he will not follow the unlawful orders of the commander in chief is facing possible dismissal from the Corps.

The Marines on Wednesday told Sgt. Gary Stein ? a Camp Pendleton Marine who started the Facebook page called Armed Forces Tea Party ? that he is in violation of Pentagon policy barring troops from political activities.

Stein, a nine-year member of the Corps, said he started the page to encourage fellow service members to exercise their free speech rights. He has also criticized Defense Secretary Leon Panetta for his comments on Syria.

The Marine Corps said in a statement that Stein's commanding officer ordered a preliminary inquiry on March 8 after receiving allegations that Stein posted the political statements violating the Pentagon's directives.

Vote: Should Marine get boot for anti-Obama Facebook posts?

"After reviewing the findings of the preliminary inquiry, the commander decided to address the allegations through administrative action," the Corps said.

"I'm completely shocked that this is happening," Stein said. "I've done nothing wrong. I've only stated what our oath states that I will defend the constitution and that I will not follow unlawful orders. If that's a crime, what is America coming to?"

Stein said he planned to fight the charges. He had applied to extend his service, which was set to expire in a few months.

Stein said in addition to being discharged, he would have his rank reduced to lance corporal if he is proven to be in violation. He said he was removed from his job at the Marine Corps Recruiting Depot in San Diego on Wednesday and given a desk job with no access to computers.

According to Pentagon directives, military personnel in uniform cannot sponsor a political club; participate in any TV or radio program or group discussion that advocates for or against a political party, candidate or cause; or speak at any event promoting a political movement. Commissioned officers also may not use contemptuous words against senior officials, including the defense secretary or the president.

Stein was first cautioned by his superiors at Camp Pendleton in 2010, after he launched his Facebook page and criticized Obama's health care overhaul. Stein volunteered to take down the page while he reviewed the rules at the request of his superiors.

He said he determined he was not in violation and relaunched the page. Last week, he said his superiors told him he could not use social media sites on government computers after he posted the message stating he would not follow the president's unlawful orders.

Stein said his statement was part of an online debate about NATO allowing U.S. troops to be tried for the Quran burnings in Afghanistan.

In that context, he said, he was stating that he would not follow orders from the president if those orders included detaining U.S. citizens, disarming them or doing anything else that he believes would violate their constitutional rights.

Another Marine alerted his command about the statement, Stein said.

Stein said he respects the office of the president, but he does not agree with Obama's policies. He said he is within his rights to speak up.

The Marine Corps said Stein is allowed to express his personal opinions as long as they do not give the impression he is speaking in his official capacity as a Marine.

Sony Xperia S actually powered by tiny robots, new ad reveals

Xperia robot

As part of its new "Made of Imagination" ad campaign, Sony asks kids to imagine how its new Xperia NXT smartphones work, and brings the results to life with acclaimed director Wes Anderson. The first ad, imagined by 8-year-old Jack Ryan, shows us how tiny robots, not chips and circuitry, power the recently-launched Sony Xperia S. They drive around in tiny cars, and can fly through the air to send movies, music and pictures to other devices. Makes more sense to us than any of this nonsense about electrons and radio waves.

Sony's latest series of commercials is a far cry from the creepy Xperia Play ads it produced last year, in which one hapless tourist lost his thumbs to a giant Bugdroid. The new ads form part of a global marketing campaign, which aims to establish the Sony brand in the world of smartphones following last year's Sony Ericsson buy-out.

We've got more tiny robots in the first of Sony's "Made of Imagination" ads after the break. There's also a look behind the scenes in a second video, which shows how these commercials were produced.

Foxit Reader 5.1

Before the advent of Adobe Reader X, there were a couple of good reasons to use a substitute for Adobe's PDF reader?it was slow to load and insecure. This inspired a cottage industry of alternate PDF viewers such as Foxit Reader and Nuance PDF Reader. While Foxit was actually a tad faster in my testing than Adobe Reader, the real reason to get this replacement is if your system resources are severely limited, as it takes up considerably less memory and disk space than the Adobe option. To that, Foxit adds a pleasing interface, the ability to share PDFs directly to Facebook or Twitter, and a slew of document markup tools.

Signup and Setup
Foxit is one of the quickest, most lightweight PDF readers when it comes to installation. Unlike Nuance Reader, you don't have to enter an email address and wait for a confirmation email to start the download. The installer download is a mere 14MB, compared with Nuance's 32MB and Adobe's 51MB. Once installed, it also takes up less memory and disk space, at 31MB, compared with 52MB for Nuance and 115MB for Adobe Reader. But even those differences will only matter to those with the most limited system resources.

Interface
The first time you run Foxit Reader, its wizard takes you through various customization options?skin theme, history saving, and reading mode (full screen or standard window frames). You can change any of this later, though, from the Preferences menu. One special point of distinction in Foxit's clean, well-designed interface is its use of tabs for multiple document view. There's also less advertising than you see in Nuance PDF Reader.

The interface uses the standard side panel that can switch between showing document page thumbnails, bookmarks, layers, comments, attachments, and signature info. There are no fewer than eleven toolbar sets, including reading, drawing, comments, forms, format and edit. I could turn off the bottom status bar showing page number and viewing options?unlike in Nuance, which always displayed this. You can split the current document into two or four windows, and did I mention that it has tabs for multiple document switching?

Using Foxit Reader
Foxit was able to correctly display the PDF Clown sample complex typesetting PDF's handwriting font, but it failed on a bunch of text on the page, rendering it as gibberish. Nuance PDF Reader couldn't even handle all the handwriting characters, and was able to render even less of the text than Foxit. If you need support for every single PDF trick, Adobe Reader X is your best bet, but most people will be fine with a stand-in like Foxit or Nuance. As with any self-respecting PDF reader, Foxit lets you snap a copy of any images in your document to the clipboard and lets you select text easily.

Markup
While Nuance PDF Reader limited me to highlighting, underlining, and crossing out text Foxit offers many more ways to mark up a doc. These include drawing over it with a selection of shapes, arrows, and pencils. I could also add callouts, notes, and typewriter text. Another set of tools actually let me calculate the distance, perimeter, or area of a region I clicked on. This was actually more than I saw in Adobe Reader X.

Safety
Though it doesn't have Adobe Reader X's isolating sandbox to protect your system from PDF exploits, Foxit goes beyond Nuance's simple disabling of JavaScript for security. Its Safe reading mode doesn't allow a document to execute any program code without your explicit consent. When I tried opening a link from within a PDF, a dialog box popped up preventing my browser from opening until I allowed the action in the dialog. Foxit also supports Microsoft Windows Rights Management Services for corporate users.

Foxit Reader can verify a document's digital signature, as can Nuance PDF Reader. It can display the name of the signer and validity info in the left panel, as can both competitors. But Adobe Reader X is a much better choice when it comes to digital signatures, since it lets you create your own rather than just verifying those of others.??

Sharing
In addition to letting you directly email a PDF from the viewer, Foxit also lets you share to Facebook or Twitter, after a login. One disappointment with this was that it didn't simple share the PDF I was viewing, but asked me to specify a file from my hard drive folders. Even after I did this, I received a "Cannot parse response xml" error message. Foxit's Mail button, however, attached whatever document I was reading to a new email in my default client.

Speed
Foxit was, by a hair, the fastest PDF viewer of the three I tested recently. I tested by opening the same 9.3MB locally stored PDF file from my hard drive within Firefox in Nuance PDF Reader, Foxit Reader, and Adobe Reader X. I tested both cold (after a reboot) and warm (after the reader had already been run) on a middling-powered laptop with a 2.53GHz dual core CPU and 3GB RAM. Here are my results for how long it took the file to display:

Cold PDF Load (seconds)

Warm PDF Load (seconds)

Adobe Reader X

8.2

2.0

Foxit Reader 5

7.8

1.8

Nuance PDF Reader 7

8.3

2.3

So, as you can see, with the latest version of Adobe Reader, the differences are no longer as stark as they used to be. Foxit does show a slight advantage, but probably not enough to notice on a moderately powerful machine.

Printing
Foxit let me tweak printing options considerably: I could choose whether to print the document only or include annotations; fit the content to the page margins; print multiple pages per sheet; or even choose a custom zoom size for the printout. Nuance adds a couple more options here, though: It lets you split large pages over multiple sheets and choose the output's DPI. Adobe Reader X, as you might expect, goes beyond either, letting you set up two-sided printing and choose a booklet format.

The Sly Way to PDF
Foxit Reader is one of the fastest ways to start reading PDFs?fastest to download and install as well as when actually opening documents. It also offers a good number of tools for working with PDFs, such as markup, signature validation, and sharing. It also offers a decent amount of security. But Adobe Reader X has a few advantages: it can display every kind of PDF, including those with complex font options; it offers a sandboxed security model, and lets you create as well as validate digital signatures. If you just want a quick fix for PDFs, Foxit is a fine choice, but for full functionality, you still need Adobe's original.

Sorry, Gwyneth! 'NYT' Stands by Paltrow Ghostwriter Story

Gwyneth Paltrow might think that The New York Times' "facts need checking" -- but the venerable newspaper is quite happy with the facts they have, thank you very much. And so the Times is standing by a story it ran in the dining section last week claiming that Paltrow and other celebrity chefs -- including Jamie Oliver, Rachael Ray and Mario Batali -- have used a ghostwriter to pen their cookbooks.

A romantic comedy of environmental folly

Sara Reardon, reporter

1st-pic-rexfeatures_1667577h.jpg(Image: CBS/Everett/Rex Features)

If you were an environmental research scientist, what would you do if you were handed an unlimited budget out of the blue? Using it to destroy an entire ecosystem, introduce an invasive species into a hostile environment and create a recreation park for one man would probably not top your list. But that?s the premise of the new romantic comedy Salmon Fishing in the Yemen which provides food for thought behind the shimmering romance.

Fred Jones (Ewan McGregor) is a fish scientist working for the UK government who receives a strange email from investment banker Harriet Chetwode-Talbot (Emily Blunt). A Yemeni sheikh (Amr Waked) wants to commission Jones to install a river in the Yemen desert and introduce Scottish salmon into it - so the sheikh can fly fish in his backyard.

Jones immediately turns him down, saying simply that the desert is too hot and, oh, it has no water. But he?s too late: the prime minister?s overzealous press secretary (Kristin Scott Thomas), hungry for a Middle East story with a positive spin, spots the proposal and turns it into a flagship project for British science. With his job in jeopardy and with his marriage on its last legs, Jones takes a leap of faith and commits to the project and the pretty investment banker.

Despite the magnitude of the undertaking, there?s little science to be seen here. At the start, Jones gives Chetwode-Talbot a sarcastic markerboard lecture of the project?s many hurdles: engineering the dam to trap water from freshwater aquifers uncovered while drilling, oxygenating the water to the right temperature for North Atlantic salmon, transporting 10,000 salmon across three time zones in giant holding tanks, and convincing the farm-bred creatures to swim up river and spawn - all of which, he assures her, will result in a river full of belly-up fish.

The next we see, though, the two are walking along the side of a canyon in Yemen, hair blowing in the desert wind as they gape at the massive scale of the project magicked into existence behind them. Of course, it would tax the audience of a movie billed as a rom-com to tolerate an hour-long lecture on aquaculture. The satirical 2010 book by Paul Torday, on which the movie is based, leaves more room to expose the details. But when Jones, with his $50 million budget, hires the engineering team who built the notorious Three Gorges Dam in China to set up shop in the Yemen, one wonders how they pulled it off - or managed to get so far in spite of the same controversies.

2nd-pic-rexfeatures_1667577c.jpg(Image: CBS/Everett/Rex Features)

Even with the romantic focus, the movie delves into some real issues about the short-sightedness of environmental projects forced on communities, however beautiful and peaceful those projects may initially seem. Jones? boss at Defra, tasked with collecting 10,000 native salmon from Scotland?s rivers, suddenly finds his picture splashed across the cover of every fishing enthusiast magazine in the U.K., denouncing him as ?the salmon snatcher.?

The idea goes down no better in Yemen. It?s hardly a spoiler to say that the idea of putting a river in the desert doesn?t thrill the sheikh?s neighbours, who object to his hubris. After tragedy strikes, Jones has a brilliant thought: ?Next time, we?ll engage the local community, make it their project and not just ours!? he exclaims, eyes shining with long-overdue enlightenment.

Though the metaphors are a bit laboured at times, it?s a sweet, lightly funny movie overall, and it?s always nice to see a scientist in a non-evil role. A very human scientist too: money, love, and the sheikh?s seductive talk of faith are enough to convince Jones to put aside his better scientific judgement and take on a project that, even the sheikh later laments was intended ?to glorify God, but now I fear it was to glorify man.? It certainly doesn?t glorify the poor salmon.

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen is currently showing in cinemas throughout the US. It opens in the UK on 20 April.

With climate change, US could face risk from Chagas disease

Friday, March 16, 2012

In the spring of 1835, Charles Darwin was bitten in Argentina by a "great wingless black bug," he wrote in his diary.

"It is most disgusting to feel soft wingless insects, about an inch long, crawling over one's body," Darwin wrote, "before sucking they are quite thin, but afterwards round & bloated with blood."

In all likelihood, Darwin's nighttime visitor was a member of Reduviid family of insects ? the so-called kissing bugs because of their habit of biting people around the mouth while they sleep.

From this attack, some infectious disease experts have speculated, the famed naturalist might have contracted Chagas disease, a parasite-borne illness carried by kissing bugs, that today afflicts millions of people in Central and South America. Darwin's bite may have led, ultimately, to his death from heart problems.

This hypothesis has been contested for decades, but if Darwin had experienced this bug attack in the United States, no one would have made such a speculation, since Chagas disease is almost unheard of in the U.S.

That could change, new research shows.

Lori Stevens, a biologist at the University of Vermont, and her colleagues, found that 38 percent of the kissing bugs they collected in Arizona and California contained human blood.

This upends the previous understanding of insect experts and doctors that the eleven species of kissing bugs that occur in the US don't regularly feed on people.

"This finding was totally unexpected," says Dr. Stephen Klotz, head of the infectious diseases department at the University of Arizona medical school and a co-author on the study.

And more than 50 percent of the bugs the research team collected also carried Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite that causes Chagas disease.

Their study is reported in the March 14 online edition of the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases.

"The basic message is that the bug is out there, and it's feeding on humans, and carries the parasite," says Stevens, "so there may be greater potential for humans to have the disease in the United States than previously thought."

So far, little of that potential has been realized. Only seven cases of Chagas disease transmitted by kissing bugs have been documented in the United States.

"We think the actual transmission is higher than the seven cases we have identified," says Patricia Dorn, an expert on Chagas disease at Loyola University and co-author on the new study, "but, even with these findings, we think the transmission of Chagas ? of the T. cruzi parasite ? is still very low in the US."

But with a warming climate that rate might rise.

Dorn and Klotz both emphasize that risk of severe allergic reactions to the bug's saliva is currently a greater problem than contracting Chagas disease. The team hopes their new work will "raise awareness among physicians and health care workers," Dorn says, about the risks of both allergic reactions and Chagas disease from kissing bugs.

"Chagas is a cryptic disease. It doesn't announce itself," say's UVM's Lori Stevens. The parasite can trigger an acute phase of the disease that may have no symptoms or may include fever, swelling of one eye, swelling around the bite and general ill feelings. In other words, it can look like many other minor illnesses.

Then the disease often goes into remission, only to appear years later as much more serious illness, including life-threatening digestive and heart problems. Some eight to ten million people in Mexico, Central America and South America have Chagas disease ? making it the "most infectious parasitical disease in the Americas," Stevens says. But it is one of world's most neglected tropical diseases, mostly affecting the rural poor, and little studied compared to other major diseases.

It's not fully clear why Chagas disease hasn't established itself in the United States. "There are two leading theories," Klotz says. One is that housing stock in Central America is different than in the United States. There, thatched roofs, stick and mud construction and dirt floors provide good habitat for local kissing bug species. In contrast, U.S. houses tend to have concrete basements, screened doors and windows, and tighter construction.

The other reason may have to with the bathroom behavior of different species of kissing bugs. "We like to joke the bugs have better manners in the U.S.," says Dorn. The primary method of transmitting the disease is through the insect's feces. The species that have made Chagas endemic to Central and South America tend to defecate while they are having their blood meal.

This fecal matter can then enter the bite wound or mucus membranes easily, transmitting T. cruzi parasite to the blood stream. In contrast, North American species "tend to feed, leave the host, and then defecate later," says Dorn, lowering the risk of transmission.

But could those more-dangerous kissing bug species move north as the climate warms?

"Absolutely," says Dorn.

"We know the bugs are already across the bottom two-thirds of the U.S., so the bugs are here, the parasites are here. Very likely with climate change they will shift further north and the range of some species will extend," she says.

This problem may be compounded by increasing numbers of houses in the U.S. being built in remote areas ? such as the mountainous areas around southwest cities like Tucson and San Diego ? "places inhabited by packrats, for example, that are the natural hosts of these bugs," says Klotz.

"The bugs are attracted by the lights at night," Klotz says. "They'll crawl under a door and once they are there, they are such incredible parasitical bugs ? they'll come find you or your pets."

But prevention is fairly easy, Stevens says. "If you're camping, make sure you close in spaces at night," she says. "In Vermont, it's not such a big deal, but in Arizona, if you sleep with the windows open, you need to put screens in. If you take precautions to keep the bugs out, you can prevent getting the infection quite easily," she says.

Stevens and her team were able to make these findings with a novel technique for identifying DNA from any vertebrate animal, including human, ? that they found in the bugs' abdomens.

First Klotz and others collected the bugs. Then Dorn, and her students at Loyola, chopped off the distal end of their abdomens and extracted all the types of DNA, she says. Then they amplified "the parasite DNA out of the whole mess of DNA -- including the bug's, what they've been feeding on and the parasite's," Dorn says.

This allowed the team to know which of the insects were carrying the parasite.

Then this total-DNA package was shipped to Vermont, where Stevens, a professor in the biology department, and her students, developed a new technique to amplify and clone the DNA of the insect's blood meals.

"If the bug fed on humans three months ago, the DNA is pretty degraded by the time you try to detect it," says Dorn. But with a novel application of certain primers, the UVM team was able to detect any vertebrate DNA present in the bug's abdomen -- even short strands of human DNA, including one case where they were able to show that one of the bugs had fed on two different humans.

The method is expensive and labor intensive, which is why the new study only presents results from thirteen insects, but the method "may be especially useful for detecting unpredicted blood meal sources and multiple blood meals," the researchers write.

Now the team would like to look at a larger sample of kissing bugs from more areas of the United States.

"Chagas isn't going to spread fast," says Stevens, "but it could spread. Finding out how prevalent it is now would be a good idea."

Snowflake Growth Successfully Modeled for the First Time

News | More Science

Mathematicians have re-created the intricate patterns of ice formation, a breakthrough that could lead to new models of red blood cells, soap bubbles and other surfaces that evolve over time

Simulations of snowflake physicsA MULTIFACETED PROBLEM: Realistically simulating the growth of snowflakes has proved a huge challenge. Above, two examples of faceted snowflake structures. Image: Barrett/Garcke/N?rnberg

Windswept from cloud to cloud until they flutter to Earth, snowflakes assume a seemingly endless variety of shapes. Some have the perfect symmetry of a six-pointed star, some are hexagons adorned with hollow columns, whereas others resemble needles, prisms or the branches of a Christmas tree.

Scientists as far back as Johannes Kepler have pondered the mystery of snowflakes: Their formation requires subtle physics that to this day is not well understood. Even a small change in temperature or humidity can radically alter the shape and size of a snowflake, making it notoriously difficult to model these ice crystals on a computer. But after a flurry of attempts by several scientists, a team of mathematicians has for the first time succeeded in simulating a panoply of snowflake shapes using basic conservation laws, such as preserving the number of water molecules in the air.

Harald Garcke of the University of Regensburg in Germany and his colleagues, John Barrett and Robert N?rnberg of Imperial College London, described their findings in an article posted at the physics preprint server, arXiv.org, on February 15. In that sense, Garcke and his collaborators ?have done the whole megillah,? says physicist and snowflake maven Ken Libbrecht of the California Institute of Technology. ?They have solved a problem that other people have tried and failed to do.?

To model a growing snow crystal on the computer, researchers must accurately simulate how the crystal surface changes with time. The surface is usually approximated by a series of interlocking triangles, but the triangles often deform and collapse in simulations, leading to singularities that bring the simulation to an abrupt halt, Garcke says.

Garcke?s team got around this difficulty by devising a method to describe the curvature and other geometric information about the snowflake surface so that it could be appropriately encoded into a computer. In doing so, the team found a way of avoiding problems other researchers had encountered.

Moreover, they found a new way to model the two main types of snowflake growth simultaneously: faceted growth, in which flat plates, such as hexagons and triangles, dominate the process, and dendritic growth, in which the flakes form treelike branches that themselves beget branches, just as dendrites extend out from nerve cells.

Previous attempts to model snowflakes using a similar approach could not reproduce both growth characteristics. "Our team is the first to do both faceted and dendritic growth, using basic conservation laws and thermodynamics," Garcke says. With the model, Garcke and his colleagues found unexpected aspects of snowflake formation, such as the strong influence of bonds between surface molecules in the crystal. They also found that the speed at which the sharp tips of snowflakes grow is directly proportional to the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere.

Crucially, the team?s approach is based on more realistic physics than past approaches. In their Physical Review E paper from 2009, mathematicians Janko Gravner of University of California, Davis, and David Griffeath of the University of Wisconsin?Madison approximated flake formation using a technique known as cellular automata. Although their work remains a milestone in successfully reproducing the intricate shapes, the method assumed that only neighboring molecules interacted?neglecting processes that occur over a continuum of distance scales.

MSI GT783-625US

With the MSI GT783-625US ($2,599.99 direct) you get a laptop with game-worthy graphics performance, Core i7 processing power, and some neat features, including a SteelSeries backlit keyboard and a multi-channel audio solution. Although $2,600 isn't exactly affordable, it is still around half of what you can expect to pay for a high-end rig from Alienware, such as the SLI-enabled M18x . Granted, the GT783 can't compete with the Alienware M18x in terms of raw GPU horsepower, but it does make owning a potent gaming notebook a bit more affordable, and it outperformed the similarly-priced (and previous Editors' Choice winner) Alienware M17x on nearly all of our GPU-intensive benchmark tests. This laptop delivers more than enough graphics chops to handle the latest crop of demanding DX11 games, making it our new Editors' Choice for under-$3,000 gaming laptops. We only wish the cooling fans weren't so loud.-

Design
The GT783 uses a black brushed aluminum case that is quite sturdy and feels cool to the touch. A backlit MSI logo is attached to the center of the lid, which has beveled corners and a tapered front edge. Weighing 8.6-pounds and measuring 2.3-inches at its thickest point the GT783 is bulkier than the 7.5-pound HP Envy 17 ($1,484.99 direct, 4 stars) but not quite as heavy as our previous Editors' Choice, the 9.8-pound Alienware M17X ($2,254 direct, 4.5 stars). Still, you probably won't want to carry this notebook around on a regular basis.

Beneath the durable lid sits a bright 17.3-inch display with a matte coating that minimizes glare without being reflective. It's a full HD (1920 x 1080) screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio, and it sports a 720p webcam in its upper bezel. Image quality is excellent on this panel; colors are strong but not oversaturated, and blacks are inky dark.

The chiclet-style keyboard is made by SteelSeries, a popular manufacturer of gaming peripherals such as mice, keyboards, headphones, and controllers. The keys are very responsive and support up to ten simultaneous keystrokes for things like rapid fire, weapons changing, and quick sideways movements. As an added bonus the keyboard features three separate backlighting zones (left, center, and right) and a 29-color palette that lets you illuminate the keys to reflect your mood or to enhance your game. Choose the wave mode to have the colors change sequentially across the keyboard, the breathing mode for a pulsating effect, or the dual color mode to have the lights fade from one to color into another. The gaming mode illuminates the ASWD keys, which get a lot of use among the gaming crowd. The touchpad is also responsive, as are the dual mouse buttons, but the pad could be a little wider; there's certainly room.

Features

A series of touch-sensitive buttons are situated at the top of the keyboard deck with a large power switch in the middle. On the left is a button labeled P1, which activates the TDE (Turbo Drive Engine) feature (more on that later). It should be noted that the TDE key only works when the system is drawing AC power (not battery power). Next to that is the Cooler Boost key, which increases cooling fan speed for those times when the gaming action is hot and heavy and especially when the turbo drive is engaged. Be forewarned though; the decibel level is close to unbearable when the fans are cranked all the way up. The Cinema Pro button puts the display into a slightly darker movie mode and enhances audio playback, and to its right is a button that enables/disables the lighting effects. On the right side of the power switch are Wi-Fi and Bluetooth buttons, a Boss key that darkens the display and an optical drive eject button.

You get a good selection of I/O ports with the GT783. On the left side of chassis are two USB 3.0 ports, a 7-in-1 card reader, a USB 2.0 port, and four audio jacks (headphone, microphone, and S/PDIF outputs). On the right side are two USB 2.0 ports and a tray loading Blu-ray burner, and on the back are HDMI and VGA outputs, a Gigabit LAN jack, an eSATA port, and the power jack. Storage is fast and plentiful; Windows 7 Home Premium is installed on the speedy 128GB SSD drive and there's a 750GB storage drive that spins at 7,200 rpm. I was disappointed to find a smattering of bloatware installed such as trial versions of Norton Internet Security and Norton Online Backup.

The GT783 produces better than average audio output thanks to a combination of Dynaudio processing, THX surround technology, and a powerful speaker system that features an embedded subwoofer . The THX TruStudio Pro utility has settings for surround sound as well as music, movie and dialog enhancers. The subwoofer is small but adds a fair amount of bass to the mix, and the speakers are loud and crisp.

Performance
MSI GT783-625US The GT783 delivers very good performance for the money. The combination of a 2.2GHz Intel Core i7-2670QM processor, 16GB of memory and NVIDIA's GeForce GTX580M graphics provide more than enough muscle to run the most demanding games and make short work of your productivity and multimedia load. Having a solid state drive doesn't hurt either. Its PCMark 7 score of 4,099 led the pack, beating both the Alienware M18x ($4,529 direct, 4 stars) (3,333) and the Asus G74SX-A2 ($2,000 street, 4 stars) (3,941).

MSI GT783-625US

Multimedia performance was also quite good but not as good as some of the pricier notebooks. The GT783's Cinebench R11.5 score of 5.40 trailed the M18x (6.52) but tied the M17x (5.40), while the G74SX-A-2 turned in a score of 5.04. The GT783's Handbrake score of 1:30 was no match for the M18x (1:15) but its Photoshop CS5 score of 3:41 edged past the M18x (3:56). The M17x led with a score of 3:26.

Graphics performance is what gaming notebooks are all about, and the GT783 rose to the task with a little help from the Turbo Drive Engine (TDE) feature, which is purported to boost GPU performance by up to 5-percent. We tested graphics performance in both modes and found an increase of 8-percent on both the DX9 medium quality DX11 high quality tests. There was a 5-percent boost on the DX11 medium quality and DX10 high quality tests, and there was no noticeable improvement at all on the DX9 high quality and DX10 medium quality tests. All graphics scores reported below are with the Turbo Drive enabled.

On our Crysis DX10 benchmark the GT783 managed 97.3 fps on the medium quality test and 41.3 fps on the high quality test. It beat the M17x on the medium quality test (93.3 fps) but not on the high quality test (58.7 fps). The SLI-enabled M18x blew everyone away with scores of 105.1 fps and 71.1 fps, respectively. On our DX11 Lost Planet 2 benchmark the GT783 gave us 93.5 fps on the medium quality test and 33.4 fps on the high quality test. Again, the M18x led with 114.1 fps (medium quality) and 64.4 fps (high quality), but the GT783 showed that it can handle the most demanding DX11 games with aplomb.

Battery life was outstanding for this class of notebook. The GT783's MobileMark 2007 time of 3 hours and 29 minutes was 30 minutes longer than the Asus G74SX-A2 (2:59) and a little more than an hour longer than the M17x (2:24). The M18x lasted only 1 hour and 38 minutes.

True gaming-class notebooks don't come cheap, and the MSI GT783-625US is no exception, but it does offer very good graphics and productivity performance at a price that won't break the bank. And, it's not just a black box with fast parts inside; the neat lighting effects give it some attitude and the SteelSeries keyboard and Dynaudio sound system might just make you forget about your desktop PC altogether. Throw in a sturdy aluminum chassis and a dynamite HD display, and we're happy to give the MSI our Editors' Choice for under-$3,000 gaming laptops. You may want to crank up those excellent speakers to drown out the fan noise though.

Republicans face off in tight Deep South primaries

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (Reuters) - Republicans Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich face off in a pair of high-stakes presidential primaries in Mississippi and Alabama on Tuesday, with polls showing a virtual three-way dead heat in both states.

The contests are critical for all three top contenders in a volatile Republican White House campaign that already has featured numerous surges, collapses and mood swings.

Gingrich needs a win to keep his struggling campaign afloat, while Santorum hopes to knock Gingrich out of the race and consolidate conservative opposition to Romney, the shaky frontrunner.

A surprise win for Romney in either state, however, would be a critical breakthrough that could put him on a path to the nomination by proving his ability to appeal to the party's core conservatives in the Deep South.

Polls found the three contenders within a few percentage points of each other in both states, with Romney showing strength as Gingrich and Santorum split the states' big bloc of very conservative, evangelical voters.

"It's very close, we think we have a good chance to win both states," Gingrich told Fox News on Monday night. "We do have a chance here to break through."

Romney has opened a big lead in delegates in the Republican race to pick a challenger to President Barack Obama, but has been unable to capture the hearts of conservatives who distrust him for some of the moderate stances he took as governor of liberal Massachusetts.

Romney rejected the notion on Monday, however, that his inability to put away his conservative rivals would mean none of the candidates would have the 1,144 delegates needed to clinch the nomination before the convention in August.

"Can you imagine anything that would be a bigger gift to Barack Obama than us not having a nominee until the end of August? That is just not going to happen," Romney said on CNBC.

All three contenders spent the final day before the votes campaigning in Alabama and Mississippi. Romney held a rally in a driving rainstorm in Mobile, Alabama, while Gingrich and Santorum appeared separately at two candidate forums, one in Biloxi, Mississippi, and one in Birmingham, Alabama.

'YOUR VOTE REALLY MATTERS'

"The primary tomorrow really matters and your vote really matters," Gingrich, the former House speaker, said in Birmingham.

"I hope you will decide that having an experienced leader who's actually helped do these things before and who is capable of taking Obama head on is what we need as a party," he said.

In Biloxi, Santorum accused Romney and Gingrich of falling for liberal science on the issue of climate change, and he urged the crowd in Birmingham to "elect a conservative, because that's the one who's going to be most electable" against Obama in November.

Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator and staunch social conservative, has gained strength among the deeply conservative and evangelical voters who make up a big chunk of the Republican electorate in the two states.

He won conservative Tennessee and Oklahoma last week, while Gingrich kept his campaign alive with a win in his home state of Georgia.

But Romney, who fares the best against Obama in head-to-head poll match-ups of any Republican, has argued his experience as the head of a private equity firm and running the Salt Lake City Olympics makes him the best choice for resurrecting the ailing economy.

Steve Pittler, a voter from Mountain Brook, Alabama, said he thought Romney had the best chance to beat Obama.

"It's more of an ?anyone but Obama' attitude, and who's the one who can win against him? I think that's Romney," Pittler said.

The other remaining Republican presidential contender, Texas Congressman Ron Paul, largely skipped the Alabama and Mississippi contests to focus on later states in the process.

Gingrich will hold a rally in Birmingham to watch the results in the two southern primaries on Tuesday, but his top rivals are already looking to the next contests.

Romney plans to campaign on Tuesday in Missouri, which will hold caucuses on Saturday, and Santorum will watch the results come in with supporters in Lafayette, Louisiana, which will have a March 24 presidential contest.

Mississippi and Alabama have a combined 90 delegates, which will be awarded to the candidates proportionally based on their vote totals.

A short History of Earthquakes in Japan

Japan is situated in the collision zone of at least four lithospheric plates: the Eurasian/Chinese Plate, the North American Plate, the Philippine Plate and the Pacific Plate. The continuous movements of these plates generate a lot of energy released from time to time in earthquakes and tsunamis of varying magnitude and effects (Geologist Callan Bentley discusses in great detail the geological setting of the Japanese Islands).

Written records of strong earthquakes date back at least 1.600 years. Until 1860 however Japanese naturalists were less interested in exploring the cause of earthquakes than the effects of such an extraordinary event and mythical explanations prevailed.

In the year 1600 the Japanese nobleman Tokugawa Ieyasu choose the village of Edo (modern Tokyo) as his new residence and three years later it was the capital of the unified Japan. The city rapidly grew and soon reached hundreds of thousands of inhabitants ? one of the largest cities at the time. Unfortunately this strategic position at the bay of Tokyo was and is still today a seismic active area.

Fig.1. Copper engraving published in 1669 by an anonymous European artist, possibly illustrating an earthquake in Edo in the year 1650. It is not clear if the artist experienced the earthquake himself or based this figure on eyewitnesses? accounts, nevertheless it is one of the oldest known illustrations of a Japanese earthquake (image in public domain).

December 31, 1703 Japan was hit by a strong earthquake with a reconstructed intensity of 8 after the Mercalli-scale. In Edo most of the wood buildings collapsed. The earthquake and its aftermath effects, like floods and fires, killed estimated 150.000 people. More than 6.500 people were killed by a flood wave, which caused havoc in the bay of Sagami and on the peninsula of Boso.

One of the most important historic earthquakes hit Tokyo November 11, 1855, killing 16.000 to 20.000 people. This event and the aftermath are retold by hundreds of woodcuts, especially in the form of a namazu-e.

October 28, 1891, the agricultural region of Nobi experienced an earthquake of magnitude 8. Modern buildings and traditional houses were damaged or collapsed, thousands of people lost their homes and 7.000 people were killed.
The English geologists John Milne (1849-1913), who in 1880 founded the Seismologists Society of Japan, studied the effects of this earthquake and published an important monographic work ?The great earthquake in Japan, 1891?. The Japanese geologist Bunjiro Koto observed a superficial dislocation during the same event and recognized a fundamental principle in seismology ? faults are not the result of an earthquake, but movements along a fault cause the seismic waves.

During the second half of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century scientific research on earthquakes became rapidly established in Japan.
Fusakichi Omori (1868-1923), director of the Seismological Institute of Japan, studied the occurrence of earthquakes around Tokyo and noted in 1922:

?Currently the immediate area of Tokyo is seismically quiet, while in the mountains around Tokyo, in a distance of about 60 kilometres, there are often triggered earthquakes, which ? although they are may felt in the capital ? are in fact harmless, because the affected areas are not part of a larger destructive seismic zone.
Over time, the seismic activity in these areas will gradually diminish; meanwhile it will increase in the bay of Tokyo and will possibly cause a strong earthquake. An earthquake with an epicentre at some distance from Tokyo will have a local, however destructive impact.?

One year later, September 1, 1923, the city of Yokohama and Tokyo were hit again by an earthquake, today remembered as the Great Kanto- earthquake. More than 99.000 people were killed by the collapse of buildings, a 10 to 12m high tsunami and fires. The bodies of more than 40.000 victims were never found.

Fig.4. ?A good idea of the tremendous devastation in Tokyo wrought by earthquake and fire. Messervey, letter dated March 5, 1924; image in public domain from the U.S.G.S. Photographic Library.

June 28, 1948 the American photographer Carl Mydans visited the city of Fukui to document the post-war development of this important industrial region. At 17:14 local time Mydans was surprised by a strong earthquake in the American military base, he remembers:

?The cement of the floor crashed. Dishes and tables were spun into our faces and we all found us involved in a mad dance?[]? when I found myself near the door, I moved into it?s direction. But the floor slipped away under my feet and I rushed against a crumbling wall.?

Mydans turned back to get his camera and in the next fifteen hours documented the desperation and destruction of Fukui. More than 5.131 people were killed. According to Mydans most of the victims perished entrapped under the debris and in the fire after the earthquake. Mydans? later promoted the distribution of emergency tool boxes, equipped with an axe and other heavy utensils to remove debris.

In January 1995 the industrial city of Kobe was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 after Richter, the strongest earthquake in Japan since 1923. More than 6.000 people were killed and more than 300.000 people lost their homes.

Fig.5. Simplified map of Japan showing a selection of earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 7 after Richter in the last 100 years and major historic events (data from U.S.G.S. 2005, earthquake data from ?Exploring Africa?s Physical and Cultural Geography using GIS?, see also ?Seismicity of the Earth 1900-2007, Japan and Vicinity?).

The devastating tsunami of March 11, 2011 was triggered by the strongest ever recorded earthquake in historic times, still one year later aftershocks are concentrated in the region where it generated.

PFT: Broncos, Cardinals leading Peyton sweepstakes

Robert Griffin IIIAP

Every Monday during the regular season, I stay up late and/or get up early and bang out a 2,000-or-so-word item that offers up 10 takes on the Sunday that was.

It?s been more than two months since I?ve had one of those late nights/early mornings, and with the free agency frenzy ramping up and the Rams-Redskins deal going down late Friday night, it makes sense to take a long look at the surprising deal before it quickly fades into the rear-view mirror.

And so here are 10 different things that (eventually) came to mind while pondering the trade that sent the No. 2 overall pick to the Redskins in exchange for the sixth overall pick in 2012, a second-round pick in 2012, a first-round pick in 2013, and a first-round pick in 2014.

1.? Tomato, tomahto as to the terms.

More than a few Redskins fans have insisted, some vehemently, that the team gave up two first-round picks, not three.

It?s largely a matter of semantics, until considering what the Redskins actually have done.? In order to get Robert Griffin III (or, possibly, Andrew Luck . . . more on that later), the Redskins gave up three first-round picks and one second-round pick.? And one of the first-round picks was the sixth overall selection.

How many Pro Bowl players who have proven consistently that they can perform at a high level in the NFL could be secured for that kind of haul?? They say every player in the league could be traded for the right price.? The Redskins could have targeted nearly any player in the league by offering the sixth overall pick in 2012, a second-round pick this year, and two more first-round picks.

2.? Redskins mortgage their future, and Griffin?s.

When Robert Griffin III visited PFT Live last week, I addressed with him the possibility that the team that moves up to get him will give up too much.

?It does cross your mind,? Griffin said, before adroitly tiptoeing around the reality that a team could make it harder for Griffin to be as successful as he can be by sacrificing too much to add him to the roster.

It definitely should cross the mind of every Redskins fan, especially if those future first-round picks are in the top 10, too.

Of course, if they are, it won?t be coach Mike Shanahan?s problem any longer.

3.? Free agency can fill some of the gaps, but not cheaply.

In 1989, when the Vikings sent a package of players and picks headlined by three first-rounders to the Cowboys for running back Herschel Walker, the Vikings couldn?t resort to free agency to fill the gaps.

Now, the Redskins can rely on the acquisition of veteran talent, especially with more than $30 million in 2012 cap room.

The problem is that excess reliance on free agency undermines the all-important nucleus of young players that any consistently successful team needs.? Likewise, with the rookie wage scale, first-round picks create far less of a financial burden.? And so by swapping three relatively low-cost first-round picks and a second-round pick for Robert Griffin III, the Redskins will now have to resort to spending more money for more seasoned (i.e., older) talent.

4.? Could a Luck power play be more likely?

Before Friday, any effort by Andrew Luck to pull a John Elway/Eli Manning would have been complicated.? If Luck had said he didn?t want to try to fill Peyton Manning?s shoes on a team that has jettisoned many of its quality players in recent days, the Colts would have had find a way to work something out with another team.

Now, the Colts need only to work out a one-spot flip-flop with the Redskins.

One one hand, the price could be too high for Washington to finish the climb to No. 1, given what the Redskins gave up to move from No. 6 to No. 2.? On the other hand, if Luck tells the Colts he doesn?t want to play in Indy and Griffin has made it clear he?ll go anywhere, would the Colts bring to town a guy who doesn?t want to be there ? or a guy who does?

5.? Rams could see Griffin, a lot.

The team that opted not to pick Griffin and to trade his rights within the conference will now have to play him at least once every three years, and quite possibly more often.

Moreover, the Rams will potentially be competing with the Redskins for playoff positioning and, more directly, in the playoffs.

And when these two teams square off, there will be extra pressure on the Rams to justify passing on Griffin.

The only thing we know with certainty at this point is that Rams defensive coordinator (for now) Gregg Williams most likely won?t be putting out a bounty on Griffin.

6.? The NFL needs a draft lottery.

Though the ?Suck of Luck? drama never gave rise to any specific complaints that teams were tanking for the top spot in the draft, this trade demonstrates that bad teams in meaningless late-season games have no incentive to try to win.? In fact, they have a very real incentive to lose.

That doesn?t mean the players or coaches will take a dive.? But it means that some owners will be even more tempted, once considering the dramatic difference between the value of the second pick and the sixth, to instruct the coach to give the backups a chance to get some game reps in order to give the front office some film that can be used to help make roster and depth chart decisions in the future.

The only way to minimize that temptation is to determine the first 10 picks based on a weighted lottery.? It would be a great offseason event, with plenty of anticipation and a significant TV audience.

7.? Shanahan has bounty insurance.

To the extent that the NFL determines former Redskins defensive coordinator Gregg Williams used bounties and if the precedent for punishment becomes a first-round draft pick, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan should be concerned.

Unless they have no first-round draft picks.? For the next three years.

And so, no matter how bad it gets, Shanahan already has protected his next three first-round picks by parlaying them into the second pick in 2012.

8.? Timing of deal favors the Redskins.

In the days after the Scouting Combine, the buzz generated by Robert Griffin III seemed to suggest that it would make sense for the Rams to hold an auction now.? But then, as the Peyton Manning sweepstakes and free agency approached, the idea of letting the teams that don?t get Manning or Matt Flynn or anyone else who may be available become more desperate ? and thus more willing to cough up a dramatic offer ? made more sense.

The Dolphins likely were the wild card in this equation.? If (when) owner Stephen Ross fails for the third time in 15 months to land a big fish (Jim Harbaugh, Jeff Fisher, Peyton Manning), Ross quite likely would have called Fisher and said, ?Name your price.?

The Redskins wisely opted to eliminate the risk of Ross blowing the lid off the market by forcing the issue now.? The fact that G.M. Bruce Allen and company ironed out the deal the night before Oklahoma State receiver Justin Blackmon drew rave reviews at his Pro Day workout prevented the Rams from getting cold feet about moving all the way down to No. 6.

Put simply, the Redskins knew that they weren?t getting Peyton Manning, and they knew it would get harder to get Robert Griffin III by waiting until after other teams didn?t get Peyton Manning.? So the Redskins offered a significant package now ? fully aware that it may have taken even more later to get the deal done.

9.? Rams need to use the picks wisely.

It?s not enough to parlay the second pick in the draft into a trio of first-round picks.? The Rams now have to use the first-round picks, and use them well.

Coupled with their own picks, the Rams will select five times in the first round over the next three years.? If they don?t emerge with key contributors who become the nucleus of the team, the trade will be regarded as a failure.

Especially if Griffin ends up being every bit as good as advertised.

10.? Rams get more stadium leverage.

Well before the Rams use that fifth first-round pick over the next three years, the Rams will know whether they?ll be playing their homes games as of 2015 in Los Angeles or elsewhere.

And having those picks will serve only to give the Rams a little more leverage as they try to work out a deal to renovate the Edward Jones Dome ? or to build a new stadium in Los Angeles.

Though the picks don?t have to pan out before the issue of franchise location is resolved, the promise of having a group of young, talented, marketable star players could make the Rams the most attractive possibility for placement in Los Angeles.? Which could make St. Louis try even harder to keep them around.
